Duluth Lawn-care Services

Does anyone know of a good lawn-care person/service in Duluth? We have a small yard, just outside of downtown. We just need a quick mow/trim because the battery in our mower is dead. As such, a mower must be supplied. We can supply a trimmer.

Any recommendations? Do you have a friend who likes to make extra cash? We called the lawn-care companies that showed up on Google maps, and none answered. Help!

Nominees for Best Coffee Shop in the Duluth area

It’s been a few months since we’ve done a poll on PDD, but we trust that with all the “Vote Duluth the best outdoor city in the galaxy or whatever” hype that most of you thought a break was for the better. Now it’s time to return to our quest to decide what the best city’s best things are.

Before we launch our poll to name the best coffee shop, we have to establish a list of nominees by asking you to rant in the comments. The ground rules are fairly simple:

  • As usual, the territory we are covering encompasses Duluth and anywhere within 10 miles of Duluth’s border – so coffee shops in Superior, Hermantown, Proctor and the various bordering townships all qualify; Two Harbors and Cloquet are out of bounds.
  • The criteria for what defines a coffee shop or what makes one “the best” is pretty open. Certain bakeries and restaurants kind of double as coffee shops, and that’s fine. Some places have a focus on live music or a kick-ass record collection, others sink a fortune into furniture or double as a place of worship. Feel free to consider those things along with the coffee itself, or don’t. In the end, voters will decide what’s important to the masses.
  • It’s fine to nominate a corporate giant like Starbucks, Caribou or Dunn Bros., but be specific if you do. Pick a particular location; don’t nominate the franchise as a whole.
  • Keep in mind that we are not issuing a challenge here to name every coffee shop that exists in the area. We’re just asking you to tell us which ones you think have a reasonable chance of winning a poll.

That’s about it. Make your thoughts known and we’ll launch the poll on Friday.

Duluth Wet Basement Recommendation

I’m looking for a recommendation for someone to come take a look at a wet basement problem. My wife and I purchased our first home a couple months ago. With the torrential rainfall last night, I awoke this morning to a nice soggy wet carpet in the basement. I’ve got the mess cleaned up and now it is time to solve the problem. It appears the rain decided to enter the house via the egress window. Who would you recommend come and solve this for me?

Shore-fishing suggestions around Duluth

I got great feedback on my barber inquiry, so now on to my next priority. I love to fish with my family, but don’t have a boat at this time. We will be purchasing one in the future. In the interim, can anyone suggest good shore, dam or pier fishing in the area? I have fished the Two Harbors Breakwall, as well as McQuade in the past, with hit and miss results.

I fish all species, so that is not a big concern. I do like to eat some of what I catch, so water with minimal consumption issues is preferred, but I will catch-and-release fish, too.

I don’t want anyone’s secret spot, just some general ideas and locations. If anyone does want to share more detail, I would be happy to provide an e-mail so you don’t have to post it on a forum. Thanks!

Duluth Barber Shops

We just moved to Duluth, and are working on establishing all of our essentials. Is there a good, classic barber shop anyone would suggest? I have had the same guy cutting my hair for 10 years. Just looking for an old-school barber who can cut my hair and my 7-year-old son’s as well.

Duluth wheelchair rental

A relative is going to be flying in from out of town and has some mobility issues and would like to have a wheelchair to get around while he’s here. Does anyone know a place that rents wheelchairs for short periods of time (less than a week)?

Woodworking supplies in Duluth

I’m trying to find aniline dye to use on wood. Google’s failing to find me anything local, but the results seem to suggest I need a woodworking supply shop. Is there such a thing in town? Google’s failing me on that search, too.

North Shore Drive-up Scenery

I am UMD student and an avid outdoor enthusiast. I love hiking, camping, climbing to hard-to-reach places to get some amazing views, etc. My family wants to come visit me here in Duluth, and wants to see some of my favorite nature spots, however, my family is a bit old and my favorite spots all require an hour-long hike and 500-foot climb, of which most of my family is incapable of doing. So I am wondering if anybody knows of any amazing scenery spots along the North Shore that do not require any strenuous activity to get to, and what I like to call drive-up scenery.

So far I have come up with areas such as Palisade Head, Gooseberry (of course) and Split Rock Nature Area. I am looking to find hiking trails and secluded beaches. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Cloud 9 Asian Bistro is open

Cloud 9 Asian Bistro opened on Monday in the Canal Park spot formerally occupied by Thia Krathong — 308 S. Lake Ave. It’s owned by the Wang family, the same folks behind the Duluth Osaka Sushi Hibachi Steakhouse in the Burning Tree Plaza. If last night was any indication, Cloud 9 a very quiet place to eat, and the food is excellent.

Commercial Kitchens in Duluth Area

We are looking for a commercial kitchen to rent as soon as possible. Any help or suggestions would be extremely helpful and greatly appreciated.

Somebody in Duluth is doin’ it right

Have you seen this thing circling the internets? How to give your kid a 1970s summer.

From their suggestions:

3. Make them play outside. Like all day. All. Damn. Day.

Well someone out on the upper reaches of the Sucker River is letting their kids do just that.  I was out for a bike ride on Friday and came across these two bikes and heard a great deal of 10-yr old (guessing) laughing coming from the river.

Well done Duluth, well done.

(Although it is funny to note: bikes were locked to the bridge. You know, since some jerk might come along and steal them).

Good place in Duluth to catch World Cup?

Does anyone know of a bar that will definitely be showing World Cup soccer matches?

Lake Superior Brewing Tap Room Grand Opening

Go see my friends at Lake Superior Brewing this weekend. As part of their 20th anniversary celebration, they have finally opened up a Tap Room at their West End location (corner of Superior Street and 27th Avenue West, behind Subway).

Abandoned places to see

Does anyone happen to know where these abandoned, yet beautiful, spots are? If you have some of your own, feel free to share pictures and locations so everyone can enjoy. There is a lot of little secrets along the North Shore like these.

Wheat/gluten-free Duluth brews?

As someone recently diagnosed with a wheat allergy, the world of local beer has become a mysterious place. Information on ingredients is sketchy at best on the interwebs. Does anyone have any first-hand knowledge if any of our local breweries offer any wheat-free or gluten-free beers? Suggestions would be most appreciated!
