I’ll lead this year’s PDD Thanksgiving prayer by declaring I’m thankful my Internet is finally back up and running, just in time for giving thanks (and after $100 and hours of anguish.)
I’m also thankful for the batch of glogg I need to start making right this minute!

PDD Troll Zone
Welcome to Perfect Duluth Day’s complaint department, hyperbole center and personal grudge factory. This is a post created for all the Internet trolls who are eager to bog down threads on this website with combative diatribes. It’s also a place for people who can’t stop themselves from responding to those trolls and suddenly become, quite frankly, more annoying than the trolls.
Has one of your comments been removed lately? Did you bitch about it in the comments? Was that comment removed too? Well now you can bitch about it again, here! And it probably won’t be deleted this time!
Although PDD has detailed policies about what types of posts and comments are permitted, the moderators have created this page — where almost anything goes — for two reasons:
1) Let’s face it, a lot of people thrive on bickering and need a place to blow off steam.
2) Most people can’t stand bickering and would like fewer distractions from the other threads on PDD.
So here it is, an open forum for exaggerations and personal attacks. Have fun. (Or should we say, “Go shove it up your Minnesota-nice-hole, you jerkwad”?)
“Murder House” condemned
Apparently the “Murder House” in West Duluth has been condemned. I walked by today and noticed some of the crazy signs on the property have been taken down. The neighbor said the place is going to be demolished.

You’ll notice the headlines from 20 years ago seem to mirror those of today. Before Barbara Reyelts’ piece on Lake Place Park, which starts 2 minutes into the video, you’ll see the president refusing to raise taxes, gas prices rising and ramp closures on local freeways.
Among the commercials at the end of the video is one for the late Senator Paul Wellstone, who back then was campaigning to replace Rudy Boschwitz.

The Wails of November
Last night at the Brewhouse I mentioned to Cody, the guy next to me at the bar, that I liked the comic on the cover of this week’s Transistor, even though I have to admit that I don’t understand it.
He told me he understands it perfectly, then started talking about fractals and how the comic is referring to a famous Japanese picture and so on. Maybe it was the Starfire Ale, or maybe I’m just stupid, but no matter how hard Cody tried, he couldn’t get me to understand this comic.
Obviously there’s a play on the phrase “Gales of November” going on. There seems to be some roller derby girls surfing. That’s about all I can make of it.
Can anyone explain this comic in a way that I’ll understand?
Northern Lights Express Passenger Rail: Stimulus or Boondoggle?
There have been a number of posts on PDD in the past regarding the Northern Lights Express passenger rail project, which would create a 155-mile train corridor connecting Duluth to Minneapolis. With Congressman Jim Oberstar’s loss to Chip Cravaack in Tuesday’s election, and Cravaack’s stated lack of support for the project, the subject of the NLX seems worth revisiting.
However, I’d like to provide some special guidelines for commenting on this post, because we’ve seen in the past that there are some pretty passionate supporters and opponents of this project, and its pros and cons tend to get lost in personal attacks and partisan silliness.
So, let’s try a little experiment. What I’d like to see is three different types of comments.
1) Simple links to news and information related to this subject, without any commentary whatsoever.
2) Comments labeled “Pro” at the beginning, which list one good thing about the project.
3) Comments labeled “Con” at the beginning, which list one negative thing about the project.
Keep it brief, resist the urge to respond to other people’s comments, resist the urge to make multiple pro or con comments, resist the urge to bash Cravaack or Oberstar, resist the urge to comment about these guidelines.
Ready. Set. Go.

Another sushi joint will be opening in Duluth, but this one will be the city’s first hibachi restaurant. Work is underway at Burning Tree Plaza in preparation for Osaka Sushi Hibachi Steakhouse.
The Burning Tree Plaza mall, located at 5115 Burning Tree Road in Duluth’s Miller Hill area, is recognized for its anchor stores Best Buy and T.J. Maxx. Osaka Sushi Hibachi Steakhouse will be situated in store #309 of the mall, between Beauty Mart and Regency Beauty Institute, so, theoretically, it should be beautiful.
Owners are Sam Lin, Dan Xu and Lester Teseng.

A few questions regarding sagging pants
In news out of Chaska: Some old guy was arrested for starting a fight with a younger dude over his sagging pants.
Question #1: Was “sagging” ever “in style”? Because rampant sagging has been going on for at least 15 years now. If this is a trend, shouldn’t it go away at some point?
Question #2: Although most people will generally concede that folks should be left alone to dress as they want, how acceptable should it be to be openly annoyed by saggers? (more…)
Sample Ballot for Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota 2010 General Election
This sample ballot is for House District 7B, so, depending on where you live, it might include some stuff you won’t get to vote on (like State Rep for 7B or State Senator for 7) and might not include some stuff you will get to vote on (like State Rep for 7A or 6B, or the big race for District 1 County Commissioner). So heads up on that.

Da Houze of Flavor
I guess I have a knack for walking past this building whenever a new sign is going up. (Like in 2006, when the Hip Hop Candy Shop opened; this is the same building, different storefront.)
Anyway, someone standing in the doorway told me Da Houze will be a record store and will open in a few weeks. So there’s the scoop. It’s on Fourth Street and First Avenue West.
The question that occurs to me now is, if it’s “Da Houze,” shouldn’t it be of “Flavah”? Is it just me, or should houses be of flavor, and houzes be of flavah?

Last Place of Commerce
I miss the days when the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce headquarters was next to the Last Place on Earth. That was synergy at its finest.
The photo above is from roughly 1993 1996. Last Place hadn’t quite finished moving in. I think the two were neighbors for at least 10 years before the chamber hightailed it to First Street.
