Video Archive: Duluth’s Chinese Lantern Restaurant

It was 25 years ago today — January 16, 1994 — when Duluth’s iconic Chinese Lantern restaurant was destroyed by fire. The video clip above is from the Asian Flavors documentary co-produced by the Minnesota Historical Society Press and Twin Cities Public Television in 2013. The full 28-minute documentary is below.

Bonus Material: The January/February issue of Duluth.com magazine has an article on “The Huie Legacy.”

I was coming home from a rave at the DECC and watched the fire from the top level of the Holiday Center parking ramp. The uniform shirts from the Lantern later turned up at Goodwill and I still have one.

Spent many lunch hours at Chinese Lantern with KDAL Sales and Production players. Many after-6PM Newscast sessions as well with unnamed Channel 3 Weather personality. (ca: 1969-74)

The Nankin Restaurant in Minneapolis was probably the best Chinese food I ever had. It was mid to late 1950's when our family was first introduced to the Nankin. It was always our favorite Chinese Restaurant. I love Chinese food because of the Nankin. The flavors were incredible. I am 71 years old and I am sad to say since the Nankin closed I have found only one other Chinese Restaurant that was comparable and that was Chinese Lantern in Duluth,MN which burnt down in 1994. Still looking for a really good Chinese restaurant.
