The 2023 edition of Shades of Africa, organized by Haiti-born Jean R. Perrault, UMD Professor of Music and Director of Orchestras, is a recurring festival celebrating African heritage.
Perrault will conduct the UMD Symphony Orchestra, performing works by Christopher Ducasse, Anthony Green, Arturo Marquez, Occide Jeanty, and Jose Moncayo. The renowned, Twin Cities-based Artaria String Quartet will join the performance as special guest artists.
Brendon Adams, 29:11 Artistic Director, will guest direct the recital for the South Africa- and US-based 29:11 International Exchange on Monday, March 13, at 7:30pm.
On Saturday, April 15, at 7:30pm, Perrault will lead the UMD Chamber Orchestra for a concert entitled “Caribbean Adventures,” featuring music from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, and Martinique & Guadeloupe.
