Courtland Street Block Party

The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District hosts the Courtland Street Block Party as part of Earth Week. The open house event will be held at both the Yard Waste Compost Site and Household Hazardous Waste Facility on Courtland Street in Duluth.
WLSSD’s Household Hazardous Waste facility will be hosting a pharmaceuticals and sharps collection during the event. Proper disposal of sharps and medications helps keep family and friends safe, protects sanitation workers, and prevents damage to the environment.
As long as spring cleaning is on a roll, chemicals and paint that need a new home or safe disposal will also be accepted. Leftover paint or and stain can become someone’s epic spring project.
Film plastic will also be accepted for recycling. Plastic grocery bags, zip-top bags, bubble wrap, and other stretchy plastic films can be recycled through a specialty program for items that don’t belong in the home recycling bin. For those who can’t make it to the Block Party, drop off of recyclable film plastics in bins at WLSSD’s HHW facility, Materials Recovery Center, and the region’s rural recycling sites will be available.
Did the heavy snow drop some branches? Those are being accepted too. Drop off leaves for free, and trees and logs at $10/cubic yard during the spring re-opening of the Yard Waste Compost Site on April 21. Yard waste is ground up and composted along with food scraps from the community. Speaking of compost, a fresh batch of Garden Green is ready to go, too.
15-minute “behind-the-scenes” tours of the compost site will be given at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. with limited spots. More information can be found by calling 218-740-4784.
