An Afternoon with the Minnesota Council for Non-Profits
I spent the better part of Monday with the Minnesota Council for Non-Profits. I attended largely because of the work I do with Wildwoods, but also because I serve on the Board of the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council and have volunteered with Clayton Jackson McGhie, Inc. (more…)
Iron Ore Mine in Northern Wisconin
The sloughs of the Bad River comprise 40 percent of the coastal wetlands of Lake Superior. A mining company is now drilling test wells it hopes will eventually lead to a 22-mile-long open-pit iron ore mine in the wooded, rolling hills at the headwaters of the Tyler Forks and Bad Rivers.
Pollutants associated with iron ore mining include sulfuric acid, arsenic, copper, mercury and phosphorous. The Republican-led Wisconsin legislature has passed legislation exempting iron ore mines from complying with environmental standards. The proposed mine will turn these beautiful woods into an industrial wasteland, and severely threaten the Bad River Indian tribe.

Duluth native launches Kickstarter campaign to support local eco horror flick
Duluth native Jim Ojala has been a professional special makeup/creature FX artist in New York and Los Angeles and now wishes to bring his first directorial feature film back home. It is an eco-horror film called, Strange Nature, revolving around the real-life frog deformity outbreaks in Minnesota that spread across the country and where it might lead. Check it out and support if you can — and please share. Since the production will be casting mainly locals maybe you’ll even get a role.
This week: Late-in-life fame, lakeside concerts and Lloyd Weber
Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.
Today is the biggest single-day golf event Duluth has to offer-the Charter-Chamber Golf Classic.
The Explorers Club at Zinema 2 shows a film tomorrow about a soul singer who waited 48 years to make it.
Pack a picnic and loiter in the Glensheen lawn to hear Gaelynn Lea and Dan Dresser’s duo The Getarounds play a Concert by the Lake Wednesday.
On Thursday, Andrew Lloyd Weber’s rock opera Evita opens at the Playhouse.
Mama Mia! Friday there’s an ABBA tribute band playing Big Top Chautauqua. My, my.
Check out what are literally being called “the most extreme obstacle course races imaginable” at the Spirit Mountain Mudman Race on Saturday. Apparently they’ve never been in line for dinner at one of my family reunions, am I right?
The last day of the Chalk.a.Lot Sidewalk Chalk Festival is Sunday in downtown Two Harbors. Hey, maybe you can get there on this train.
So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know.

Come Get Me

Gray skies hampered an already-low visibility today. Water was warm. “Come Get Me” by 14 Iced Bears.
Aviation Action after Greek Tastiness
I wish very much that I could have talked my friends into attending the Lark of the Lake festival today ($30 admission for two after the money spent at the tasty Taste of Greece event at the Marshall School was too tough for their wallets). (more…)

Wholesome Album Covers
Does Sexhawk’s release of the Nuts of a Warrior EP do anything to offset the old Ween album art controversy? Or is there not enough flesh?
Hacienda del Sol: When will it return?
I miss the Hacienda. I mean, I really miss it. I just want a basket of its chips, some salsa, a beer, and a cheesy something or another. When oh when will it come back?
Another (Unexpected) Duluth-Related Kickstarter
For those of you who know your comic book writers, the name Alan Moore is usually found at the top of most peoples “favorites” list (maybe because he’s an incredible writer, or maybe because he’s a fucking wizard and people are scared of him).
Anyway, I was watching Alan Moore’s Kickstarter video for the “His Heavy Heart” project, and was completely surprised to hear the Duluth connection!
Skip ahead to 3:45 if you want to hear Alan Moore drop Alan Sparhawk’s name as a collaborator on the project!
Oh boy! Another Open Mic! But this one’s outside by the lake!
Tonight, from 6 to 9 p.m., there will be an open mic at Leif Erikson Park, specifically meeting at the stone stage. Any short content is welcome, original material encouraged, but whatever you wish to share is fine.

Local Music Research Discussed on KUMD
Seth Langreck, a student at UMD, was interviewed by KUMD for research started here on PDD.
Bob Dylan Duluth Concert Photos
Some things improve a bit with age. The out of focus shot above is the best I could do at the 2013 Bob Dylan concert in Duluth, but it’s better than I did in 1999, below.
So, who did better than me?
Sloppy Cloud Cult post-rainout acoustic set clips from the Twin Ports Bridge Festival
It started raining at the Twin Ports Bridge Festival pretty much the moment Cloud Cult hit the stage. About four songs into the set it started pouring. When the announcement came that the show couldn’t continue, the crowd slowly dispersed, then rushed back when the band started performing unplugged as the rain relented. When informed they needed to get off the wet stage, the band climbed into the pit area behind the guard rail to belt out another tune. Then they escaped under the stage and the downpour resumed.

Car sharing options in Duluth?
I’m back in lovely Duluth for the summer, and am wondering if there are any car sharing options yet. I don’t own one since I work abroad and am only here a couple months each year. I’m getting used to having access to things through collaborative consumption models like Zipcar. Anything here yet?
This week: Bob, bucking broncos and brews

Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.
Tonight check out local musician Markus J. Dandy’s new open mic at Brewhouse.
On Tuesday, that guy who wrote the new Darius Rucker single “Wagon Wheel” will be performing at Bayfront Festival Park.
Then on Wednesday, shuffle your way to the Endion Station on the Lakewalk for the Sidewalk Shuffle 5K, and raise some money for the Y’s Strong Kids Campaign.
Thursday you’ll have a chance to go to Sacred Heart and yell at Low in person for that 27-minute song they played. Tim Kaiser will be there for moral support. If that’s too controversial for you, the Spooner Rodeo starts the same day.
Friday, explore some art that deals with biology, self, and the past and present. Extinct, Extant is showing at the Prøve.
By Saturday you’ll probably need a drink. Join craft brewers from all over Minnesota for the All Pints North Summer Brew Fest at Bayfront.
Last but not least, Tycoons hosts the Meat Puppets Sunday. Actual Wolf and Enemy Planes open.
So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know.
