Sunday, May 2, University of Minnesota Duluth students and faculty will be giving from the arts. Starting at 7 PM, live vocal and instrumental performances will be filling the beautiful Sacred Heart Music Center to benefit the many important programs of CHUM (Churches United in Ministry) and Sacred Heart. Accompanying the jazz and classical stylings of some of UMD’s most talented musicians will be a silent auction of original art pieces as well as a dessert and beverage bar bringing together some of the most delicious gifts the Duluth community has to offer.
Showing your support is as simple as showing up, but any monetary donations will also be greatly appreciated. So at 7 PM, May 2, bring all your friends and family to 201 W. Fourth St. and feel free to dance!
A Winter Downpour this Sunday!
We’re a new band debuting at Homegrown’s New Band Night this Sunday at Pizza Lucé. This is a free, all ages show… we hope to see you there. A Winter Downpour is a new band featuring two ex-members of Portrait of a Drowned Man and a couple of newcomers.

May 1 – Dulcimer Day in Duluth
Master dulcimer performer/instructors will be in Duluth Saturday, May 1. Concerts at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Instrument vendors and local crafters 10 to 4 p.m. 20 classes held starting at 9 a.m. with assorted traditional folk instruments: dulcimers, autoharp, banjo, and bowed psaltry. Workshops to dye a scarf and make a whistle. Lunch will be for sale by Community Action Duluth to raise funds for their Circles of Support group. Class schedule at www.DulcimersInDuluth.com. This is the 9th year for this fair.

The Automaton Records Media Conglomerate Presents the Twin Ports: A Compilation for Homegrown
Well, I know that pretty much everyone in the area already knows all about this project because I’m such a big deal around here and everyone talks about everything I do and whatnot, but the Automaton Records Media Conglomerate is proud to be offering up for this year’s Homegrowners a very special compilation.
It’s a limited edition and handmade production — 39 songs on two CDs, all generously donated by the artists for use with this generously special compilation. The cost is $6! It includes a 4-color hand screen printed 100% recycled cardboard double sleeve! Holy cripes! This is a limited edition of only 200 copies.
The profits from this compilation go to the festival. So, you know, it’s good to support that too.

UMD Spring Sustainability Fair – Thursday, April 22nd – 9am-2pm – UMD Kirby Student Center
This semester the theme of the UMD Sustainability Fair is Art and Design. What can you do at the fair? Attend an engaging conversation with community experts! Architect David Salmela, FAIA, will discuss architecture and sustainability. Pastor David Carlson of Duluth’s Gloria Dei Lutheran Church will talk about his experience with the Early Adopter’s training and how the Natural Step Framework as affected the congregation. Susan Meyers, graduate of UMD’s Masters of Liberal Arts program, will talk about her project, Creating a Journey into Healing with Art. Ryan Jordan, UMD Admissions Diversity Counselor, will present on Music and Social Change. You’ll have the opportunity to learn more about sustainability efforts in the Twin Ports by visiting over 20 community and campus organization’s informational and interactive booths! Happy Record Store Day
Today is the third Saturday in April, which means that it’s officially Record Store Day. The way to celebrate Record Store Day is to go check out your local independent record stores, which in the Twin Ports means either the Electric Fetus or the Vinyl Cave.
From the official website:
A Record Store Day participating store is defined as a physical retailer whose product line consists of at least 50% music retail, whose company is not publicly traded and whose ownership is at least 70% located in the state of operation. (In other words, we’re dealing with real, live, physical, indie record stores-not online retailers or corporate behemoths).

Here is a cover of “16 Tons” played by Father Hennepin with Al Sparhawk adding in a great Marc Ribot-style guitar solo.
Tim Nelson also makes a guest appearance, banging on what I think was a piece of Al’s washing machine. The song was from a demo tape recorded shortly after Homegrown II, where Al joined Father Hennepin on stage for some Father Hennepin classics as well as a couple of countrified Low songs.
Speaking of old Father Hennepin recordings… does anyone have a live recording of their version of “Waitress in the Sky”?

Live 2 Play silent auction carryover — Homegrown tickets and CDs
Last Saturday’s Live 2 Play concert featured a silent auction that raised a couple thousand bucks for youth music and hockey programs. One item from the silent auction is still up for bid …
* Two weeklong passes to the Homegrown Music Festival and two Homegrown CD compilations.
This package has a $66 value. Bidding reached $30 on Saturday, and then someone bid $100. No one bid after that, but the person who bid $100 never showed up to claim the items. Since this person also scribbled an unreadable name on the sheet and a number to a phone that no one answers, it seems only appropriate to reopen the bidding.
The starting bid is $30, the second-highest from Saturday. Do I hear $35? $35 anyone? C’mon folks, it’s a good cause, do I hear $35? This silent auction ends today at 4 p.m. Use the comments to this post to place your bid.
Breaking Glass releases new video
“Ease Back” is the first single from Breaking Glass’s inaugural Shatterproof CD. These up and coming rockers from Esko play a variety of original and classic rock tunes. This music video was produced by FitzPhoto as part of a prize package from winning the 2009 Duluth-area Battle of the Bands contest, put on by Junior Achievement.
Breaking Glass will be performing at the Battle of the Bands Kickoff Party on Saturday, April 17, at Hell Burgers in Canal Park. Showtime is 8 p.m.
The band will also be opening the Battle of the Bands with a special performance at the DECC on Sunday, April 18, at 2 p.m., followed by the battle, featuring 12 area high school garage bands.
