Arrowhead Native Plant Explorers Nature Walk
The first guided nature walk of the newly-formed Arrowhead Native Plant Explorers group is in the Bagley Nature Area. Free parking is available in UMD's Lot U off of Junction Avenue. Participants will meet at the yellow gate leading into Bagley from the parking lot. No prior plant-identification experience is necessary.

Driftwood Crafts
This University of Minnesota Duluth Recreational Sports Outdoor Program class provides instruction on creating windchimes and other crafts with wood gathered from the shores of Lake Superior. Materials are provided. Participants meet in the Bagley Nature Area classroom. The cost is $2 for UMD student members and $6 for others.

With schools closed on Jan. 21, children ages 5-12 can spend the day with UMD Kidsrock Camp. The day of winter activities includes sledding, ice skating, snowman-building, cookie-decorating, winter crafting and sipping on hot cocoa. Registration is limited to 32 children. Deadline to sign up is noon on Jan. 20. Children must pack a lunch and dress for the weather.

Diamond Willow Hiking Sticks
Learn to make diamond willow hiking sticks. Participants will harvest one or more sticks and bring them back to the working area to peel, shape and carve, leaving the three-hour class with the completed project. Register by noon on April 27. Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness welcomes families in the Duluth area to experience the adventures of the Boundary Waters at this event. Through a partnership with Duluth Parks and Recreation and the UMD Recreation and Sports Outdoor Program, families can try out BWCA activities like paddling, portaging, fire-building and using a map and compass.

As the winter Solstice nears, symbolize the importance of kindling warmth and light in our hearts with the Spirit of the Lakes annual Community Lantern Walk. Gather up on the hill to light the lanterns and then bravely carry the lights into the darkness and circle the pond. There will be a fire and hot cider afterward. Please RSVP so there are enough lanterns and treats — suggested family donation is $5-$10. Bring your own lantern if you wish.
