Apr 3, 2023, 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm | Free | UMD Kathryn A. Martin Library

Event Navigation

Minnesota author Timothy Cochrane will be doing a presentation, reading and book signing on his new book Making the Carry: The Lives of John and Tchi-Ki-Wis Linklater from the University of Minnesota Press. The event takes place on the fourth floor rotunda in the Kathryn A. Martin Library at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

John Linklater, of Anishinaabeg, Cree and Scottish ancestry, and his wife Tchi-Ki-Wis, of the Lac La Croix First Nation, lived in the canoe and border country of Ontario and Minnesota from the 1870s until the 1930s. Making the Carry tells their story.

Cochrane was superintendent at Grand Portage National Monument for 20 years, where he worked closely with the Grand Portage Band of Anishinaabeg and the tribal council. His books include A Good Boat Speaks for Itself: Isle Royale Fishermen and Their Boats, and Gichi Bitobig, Grand Marais: Early Accounts of the Anishinaabeg and the North Shore Fur Trade, both from Minnesota, and Minong: The Good Place—Ojibwe and Isle Royale.

The second annual Twin Ports Festival of History runs March 30 to April 4 at multiple venues in Duluth and Superior and features lectures, tours and more. The event aims to provide those with an interest in history an opportunity to listen and discuss topics with authors and historians of local, regional, national and international renown.

The full schedule of daily events and their locations is available on the Twin Ports Festival of History webpage.
