I know it’s not the Twins but …
At least it’s not the Yankees. I’ve waited 39 years for this. Dad would be proud.

Superior has disc golf in Central Park
A new disc-golf course opened in Superior last week. It’s in Central Park, about one mile east of the UWS campus.
Other courses in the area include:
- Mont du Lac
- Miller Creek (by Lake Superior College)
- St. Scholastica
- UMD
- Carlton Disc Golf Sanctuary
Topics for the comments:
- Mont du Lac and Miller Creek are the best courses, right?
- Is this a trend with staying power, or will no one be playing in five years?
- So, what do you think of the new course in Superior?
Randy Moss a Viking again?
ESPN, the NFL Network and Boston Herald are reporting that Randy Moss has been traded by the New England Patriots to the Minnesota Vikings for a third-round pick.
Brett Favre, Adrian Peterson, Jared Allen, Pat Williams, Kevin Williams … and now Moss? That’s way too many superstars on one team, isn’t it?
At the very least, it’ll be interesting … if true.
Watching the Twins
Actually, I was kind of serious. We got no cable, and the American League games, all of them, are on TBS. Totally bites. Even the ALCS isn’t available for us Luddites. And, no, there are no options for friends with cable. So, if I am forced to go public with my Twins devotion, my bandwagon hopping on, where do PDDers suggest I go without feeling like I have to buy a beer every inning — though that may be fun on a Friday. Looking for low-key, non-sports bar setting. Possible?
Thome at the Plate
I guess this one is right up there with “Did You See Jackie Robinson Hit That Ball?” and “Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio.”
Minnesota Grouse Hunting
Has anyone been out early-season grouse hunting? I’m curious how people have been doing. I have seen decent numbers around Duluth and up the shore.
Family Fun Day to Help Save the Skating Rink at Lower Chester Bowl
On Saturday, Sept. 25, at 2:30 p.m., all neighbors are invited to gather at the Lower Chester Park Rink on East 15th Avenue between Fifth and Sixth Street. This is a pot luck event with games, balloon animals, a magician, and other silliness.
There is a serious side to this event, too. The rink and warming house at Lower Chester Park are in danger of being torn down — and soon. They are still in good repair, and it would be a shame to see this facility continue to go to waste. The facility has been under-utilized for several years due largely to lack of consistent hours, no Zamboni, no easy way to flood the rink, etc.
The goal of this gathering on Saturday afternoon, aside from having some good-ol’-fashioned family fun, is to mobilize a neighborhood-wide grass-roots effort to keep this rink alive. We’d love to fill the rink on Saturday afternoon with as many neighbors as possible (from BOTH sides of the creek!). College students, high school students, and families with young children are especially encouraged to attend.
Utensils, plates, bowls and cups will be provided. Bring lawn chairs, beverages, anything with wheels (human-powered), and lots of enthusiasm. Folks with questions should contact Mabel Galvin at 724-7667, or Bev Bertnson at 724-6126.
Charities win when you vote Bob in!
Duluth charities and UMD can win up to $70,000 in this year’s Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year contest. Plus the alumni association that rallies the most votes will win an additional $10,000.
Bob Nielson is again in the running for NCAA Division II coach of the year, after nearly winning the title last season. Everyone can vote every day on their smart phone and each of their computers at coachoftheyear.com. Your vote could mean up to $80,000 for our community.
(Video created by three UMD students is no longer available.)

Duluth Does Derby!
Did you know? Duluth/Superior has two women’s flat track roller derby teams!
HCRD – Harbor City Roller Dames
DSRD – Duluth Superior Divas
Last Saturday, skaters from MNRG, NSRG, FMDG, the TC Terrors and Milwaukee Schlitzkrieg all got together for an exhibition bout at Wessman Arena. Pirates vs. Ninjas was a success!
Congrats to DSRD on their first event!
IF you are interested in participating, you can find information on each of the teams’ respective web sites. Potential skaters, refs and volunteers are encouraged to come. All skill levels are welcome – they can teach you!
The sport is growing fast! With this kind of action, a full bar and great local music during halftime, it’s no wonder!
