Un Taco Mas: “We are still here”
Hello Duluthians, I am Rosalinda, owner of Un Taco Mas — the taco trailer mentioned in a PDD post last month. We would like to say thank you to all who came out and tried our food. We would like to apologize for it taking longer to re-open than we expected. We ran into some financial problems and we are working hard to get it up and running again. We will have a bigger menu, so please keep your eyes open and look for us. Again we thank you for your support and look forward to serving you again!
Growler Magazine Contest
Hey Duluthians! Growler Magazine just nominated Fitger’s Brewhouse for “Best Brewpub” in Minnesota.
Would you vote for us? Everyone else up for the vote is from the Twin Cities and it would be great to make a strong Duluth showing!
Awning Edit
When did this happen? The riot of apostrophe errors on the Sir Ben’s awnings is gone. Here’s how they look now. (more…)
Brewhouse at Great American Beer Festival
Big congrats to the Fitger’s Brewhouse for winning a medal at the GABF 2012. Fitger’s Framboise took the bronze in the American-style Sour Ale category. I haven’t tried it, but I’m sure it’s fantastic.
Rosie’s Taco Trailer in Duluth Heights
I never post anything here, but I felt it was my civic duty to inform the PDD community about Un Taco Mas by Rosie, a taco trailer in the parking lot of Old World Meats. Rosie is from San Antonio, Texas, and makes the best taco I have had in Duluth. I had one carne asada and one carne quisada. She made the flour tortillas fresh while I waited, the filling was amazing. She has a full breakfast menu as well, she is there from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. It is on the corner of Basswood Avenue and Central Entrance. The place is very much worth the visit.

What do Duluthians want?
The DNT article about Rod Raymond and Tim Nelson’s purchase of Endion Station said this:
Raymond said he will take advice from anyone wanting to chime in on the finer points of his business plan.
“What do Duluthians want?” he said. “What do tourists want?”
So, what do you want?
Tops on my list would be a bakery that sells artisan bread and really good coffee. With outdoor seating.
What do you want?
Update on New Stuff
Noodles & Company opened at the Miller Hill Mall yesterday, according to Business North.
Shake It, the new nutritional protein shake and juice bar in West Duluth (at the former Spirit Bottle Shoppe) will open Sunday if I remember correctly what the sign by the door indicated today.
Carmody 61, the new bar/restaurant in Two Harbors that is taking over the former Viking Legends opens on Oct. 1, according to co-owner Rick Boo.
7 West Tap House, Minnesota Wine Exchange and Canal Park Brewing are all potential late October openings, according to word on the street. (We haven’t mentioned Minnesota Wine Exchange on this site before. The location will be 3 W. Superior St., the owners are Brent Johanson and Debra Fellman, and the place will have a rotating selection of Minnesota wines.)
PDD Poll: How Much Heat?
The stereotype maintains that it’s hard to get spicy restaurant food around here because so many people prefer their food on the mild side. Where do you stand?

Why is there great food on Park Point?
Because of all the sand which is there!
Or the noodle bowl or the fried pretzels…
Every Wednesday night, the Chow Haul food truck sets up at the corner of Lake Avenue and 11th Street, to catch the sailors coming in from the races before they get their land legs back.
You can read more about the food truck and its other regular stops on my blog. Or go right to the source, the Chow Haul website.
Dining Vegan in the Duluth Area
Being vegan, not vegetarian, has its challenges when dining out. I’m looking for suggestions of the best vegan eats in Duluth/Superior and the North Shore.
Downtown restaurant gem: Oriental House
At 319 W. First St. is an 8-month-old Asian restaurant specializing in Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese cuisine called Oriental House. My spouse and I stopped by this evening to try it out. With the recent PDD post on Pak’s, I figured the power of social media would get the word out on this little gem of a restaurant since I don’t think many folks know about it.

New Asian fusion restaurant alert: Pak’s Green Corner in West Duluth
There’s a new restaurant in the Denfeld area at 4131 Grand Avenue that I can only describe as Thai fusion. It’s called Pak’s Green Corner and it’s got a lot of traditional Thai dishes, but also it’s got dishes like Poutine and a Phad Thai burrito on its takeout menu. The sit-down menu had even more unconventional takes on traditional Thai dishes that truly made my mouth water.

Duluth Jalapeno Express: Closed
Walt Dizzo reports via Facebook today: “So bummed, best restaurant in town. RIP Jalapeno Express.”
Remember all the ranting and raving about the greatness of this place? What happened?
Restaurant with Wifi for fantasy draft
Just seeing if there is an updated list or other suggestions on a restaurant that has a) Wi-fi b) food c) beer d) a spot where 10-12 people can sit around a table near an outlet and be able to hear one another. Thanks.
Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream on Lake Superior
Who can’t use ice cream during these hot days of summer! There’s a new ice cream shop at 1631 London Road (where Dairy Queen used to be). My husband and I were there on Saturday for their ‘soft’ opening and the ice cream was wonderful. They have soft-serve and traditional hard-serve ice cream. Take a detour off the Lakewalk and check it out!
Chain restaurants are fun: Leeann Chin and other Duluth restaurant gossip
So, Leeann Chin is recruiting for employees in Duluth on Craigslist. Where’s that going to go?
And whatever happened to Noodles & Co. coming to the mall?
A & Dubs
It’s back. First day I’ve seen A and Dubs open this year.
I couldn’t find any reviews from burgerdogboy for some reason and he’s usually got Duluth hand food pretty well covered. However, I did find this little blurb on Jim Heffernan’s blog.
PDD reader-generated A & Dubs stories are most welcome in the comments.

Family-style Asian Food
I am coordinating an event with about 12 college students attending. The dinner request is for “Chinese” [or similar]. This brought up a discussion with staff that there [apparently] isn’t any place around here that has family portions as an option. I’ve never had the need, so I don’t know if this is accurate. Regardless, could I please get some suggestions on where there is value-priced Asian style cuisine available?
Where is the best place to eat smelt?
The spring smelt run should be not too far off. I was wondering where people thought the best place to get the golden fish fries were in the area? I have heard that most places that serve them don’t get them from local sources. Any smelt aficionados out there?
