Camera crews, form a semi-circle. It’s time to remove the Last Place on Earth sign.
Among the throng of photographers and videographers, Lane Ellis captured this 17-minute don’t-miss-a-moment-of-the-action version of the Last Place on Earth sign being removed by city workers.

I Found Myself Stuck in an Experimental Film
Vincent Gargiulo here with a short film I shot in Duluth and Superior in June 2013 when I was in town for the Duluth is Horrible premiere. It’s part of my bigger film, Fantastic, but also works as a stand-alone piece. Enjoy. Rated R for Really Artsy.
I cleared the harbor of ice singlehandedly. You’re welcome!
Here’s how I did it.
Giant Water Bug, Outer Harbor by Lakewalk
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlzmqfAOWCI
The Giant Water Bug is among the largest insects in North America. Size was at least 3 inches long. They live around the edges of lakes where they trap air under their wings and dive for small fish and frogs. This mature adult probably overwintered in the mud.
A Visit to the Dollhouse Store
Thanks to Bev at Teeny Weeny Miniature Cottage for letting me shoot this video in her store (2031 W. Superior St., Duluth).

Solon Springs native Christine Rapsys moved from Duluth to Los Angeles and, one year later, joined with co-writer/co-director Christine Dennis to produce this dramatic short film. The story follows Maya, a young woman whose best friend, Zoe, dies tragically in an unexpected accident.
Wind Song was on the Duluth Superior Film Festival schedule, but the screening has apparently been cancelled.

Eighth Annual Bike Swap
Continental Ski & Bike’s eighth annual Bike Swap was held in April. This event is a great way to give back to the community and get a great deal on a bicycle in the process. Here is a little video showing what the event is all about. Video by Higher Base Media.
PDD Drone flight over the High Falls on the Pigeon River
Quick video at the High Falls on the Pigeon River last week. This waterfall is the highest in Minnesota at 120 feet. It was a very windy day but my new rotopixel two-axis gimbal performed well to keep the camera pretty steady. You can visit the falls at the Grand Portage State Park just a few blocks from the Canadian border on Highway 61. Aerial Footage by www.liftoffaerials.com

St. Louis Bay Time Lapse
Video by Alex Kunnari. Although it’s called “Time Lapse Saint Louis Bay,” it appears to have been shot over the Superior Bay or maybe the Duluth Harbor Basin. Close enough. Cool video.

A poetic documentary about the beauty of water, shot in Duluth by David Jensen.
Sarah Krueger Dance Party – Homegrown 2014
Sarah Krueger ended her set at the Rex during Homegrown 2014 by inviting her girlfriends on stage for a good ol’ fashioned dance party. Well played Sarah Krueger, well played.

Homegrown 2014 – Biochemical Characters
The Biochemical Characters lit up Amazing Grace with their blazing set of Boreal Spirituals Friday night. I believe.
Homegrown Music Video Fest 2014
Year #6: Back in February, participants picked a band/song out of Walt Dizzo’s bucket, and 13 people followed through by delivering videos before April 21. Here’s a page with all the video links that were sent to PDD, in the order that they played Monday and Tuesday nights. If any of the participants have others posted to YouTube or Vimeo and want to send us the link, we’ll add them to the list.
There will be one more screening Sunday, May 4, 2 pm at Chester Creek Cafe.
Happy 60th anniversary, Sammy’s Pizza
It all began 60 years ago. Sam and Louise Perrella moved their small cafe from Keewatin to Hibbing. And with that move, expanded the menu with pizza. Sam had learned about the Italian item from the men who worked in the mines.
The Figures
Happy Homegrown Duluth! I had to send a contribution from afar. I wanted to premiere my first short film on PDD. It’s a spooky little thing filmed in Duluth during a brief visit I made in 2014. The soundtrack is by myself and Eric Lyman, we record as Pale Wall. This film may be best viewed around 3 a.m. with a warm blanket. Cheers.
If you want this in your collection I have artfully packaged DVDs available. Contact jhuntzinger @ gmail.com
Video Archive: Homegrown Kickball 2004
Ahhh … the fresh spring air, clogged lungs and diseased livers. Scenes from the Homegrown Music Festival Kickball Classic of a decade ago, and the after-party at the Shaky Ray. The song is Bone Appetit’s “Drive Away.” Video shot and edited by Barrett Chase.
