Cloquet's Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church dedicated in 1926 - Perfect Duluth Day

Cloquet’s Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church dedicated in 1926

The May 28, 1926 issue of the Duluth Herald reports on the upcoming dedication of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church at 102 Fourth St. in Cloquet. The building is still in use, now serving as Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

The paper’s description of the church follows:

The new church, a beautiful structure, 138 by 84 feet over all, was designed by the Cordella & Olson company, Minneapolis, and is of Romanesque architecture. About 850 people can be seated, the balcony space included.

The floor is of concrete, colored under the pews and in the aisles, sanctuary, vestibule and restrooms by cork. The octagonal columns are of granite monolith. The ceiling is 44 feet high and finished in ornamental plaster, while the lower ornamental work is of cast travertine, the walls of texstone. The art glass windows are of European design.

In 1989, Our Lady of Sacred Heart merged with St. Casimir’s Church to form Queen of Peace Parish, part of the Diocese of Duluth.
