Annual Requests: Mountain Dew Throwback and Paczki in Duluth

Fat Tuesday is coming … and yesterday, at Mt. Royal, I found my annual fave, Mountain Dew Throwback.

So, where have you seen the made-with-sugar, not-corn-syrup delight called “Mountain Dew Throwback?” And what other sugar-soda delights are available in Duluth? Last year, I discovered the Mexican Coke at Cub via this thread. I’m open to other, maybe even local? sodas.

And: last year, I discovered that not all Super Ones are the same. The Paczki delights vary from location to location. Last year, the Lakeside Super One was awesomest — best in taste and appearance. But where will I find them this year?

One of my favorite sodas is Jupina, a Cuban pineapple soda sold at Cub Foods. It contains real sugar, though I'm not sure if it's free of HFCS since it also contains "corn sweeteners." Also, 12 ounces contains a whopping 200 calories, so, y'know, enjoy in moderation.

(mexican coke has no HFCS)

Some Mexican Coke does actually have HFCS, including the Mexican Coke sold at the Two Harbors Super One. TH's Super One does have throwback Mountain Dew and it seems to move pretty slowly, if you want to make a road trip. It also has paczki, but I think they're from a Super One central location, as the store doesn't have its own bakery.

"In response to consumer insistence on a more natural product, PepsiCo in 2009 released a limited run production of Mountain Dew Throwback, a variation consisting of sugar in place of high fructose corn syrup. Mountain Dew Throwback has since been re-released for brief periods (generally 8-12 weeks at a time), including a 2nd wave from December 2009 - February 2010 and a 3rd wave in Summer/Fall 2010. A 4th limited production run is scheduled to begin in March 2011, lasting for a total of eight weeks."

The BlueSky line of soda pops are available at the Co-op.
Refined sugar, baby.

Saw both at the Kenwood Super One last week.

Izze soda doesn't have HFCS. I think the fruit ones don't have added sugar, either -- just fruit juice. You can get it at Mt. Royal and the co-op. Really good stuff.

HFCS should be only one of the OP's worries with regards to Dew:

INGREDIENTS:
Carbonated water, concentrated orange juice, citric acid, aspartame, potassium benzoate (preserves freshness), citrus pectin, potassium citrate, caffeine, gum arabic, natural flavors, brominated vegetable oil, yellow 5 and erythorbic acid (preserves freshness).

Phenylketonurics: Contains phenylalanine.

As far as a the local question goes, does anyone know if the sodas made by Fitger's Brewhouse are made with refined sugar? There's root beer, of course, but also cream soda (which is my favorite) and seasonal choices like orange cream soda.

I would kill to learn whether their soda is HFC free. I was worried it was brewed, like 1919 -- oh so awesomely local, but oh so corn syrupy.

You would kill to learn, but have you asked?

Two servers and a cook, then I decided "nobody working in the front knows."

I have no access behind the scenes...

As far as I know 1919 is corn sugar. I tastes like it and their website says as much.

Mount Royal has Mexican Coke in their Mexican aisle, however, the label says "high fructose, corn syrup and/or sucrose" [sic on that comma].

Saw the Pop Shoppe on the shelf somewhere last week.
I was tempted to jet back to 1975. I wish I could remember
where I saw it, seems like a dream now. I will be kicking myself for months.

Pop Shoppe was like 20 yrs ago. *rolls eyes*

The Pop Shoppe is still in business, and while not available in Duluth, if you go to their website you can find many retailers elsewhere in Minnesota.

PopShoppe has Glucose-Fructose, which is Canadian for HFCS.

Cub Foods sells its house brand, Wild Harvest sodas. Cane sugar, in the natural foods section. Cans only, BPA? Note: may adversely affect beard growth rate.

I'll have to dig out an old Mother Earth News issue "Brew grape soda for 5 cents a gallon!" I think the man on the cover had a pretty sweet Dusty Gibbons. That will narrow it down by half.

Yeah, but can you still get Fresca? Grammy always had Fresca. Anybody remember Rondo as well?

Target checkout line had Sierra Mist with natural flavoring and sucrose.

Paulson's SuperValu in Pike Lake has a brand of natural sodas...maybe Wild Harvest.

Pop Shoppe is a Super America product. You will find it in their store on Woodland Avenue.

Today I spotted Mountain Dew Throwback in large supply at the West Duluth Super One in the entryway. It was priced at $4 for a 12 pack.
