Postcards from the Androy Hotel
Superior’s Androy Hotel opened 100 years ago today — May 15, 1925. It was advertised as the largest and only fireproof hotel in Superior.
Designed by architect Roland Buck, the Androy’s nine stories were built with reinforced concrete.
The caption on the back of the postcard reads:
Hotel Androy
Fireproof
Superior, Wis.
Opened May, 1925
160 Rooms 100 Baths
Cafe — Fountain — Grill
The name “Androy” was derived from combining the first names of Andrew Doran and Roy Quigley, who managed the hotel in Superior along with the Androy Hotel in Hibbing, which was built in 1921 and was financed by the Oliver Mining Company.
Famous guests who stayed at the Superior hotel include Jacqueline and John F. Kennedy, Charlie Chaplin and J. Edgar Hoover.
The article below is from the May 16, 1925 Duluth Herald, reporting on the Androy’s opening day.
