Footloose monkey afield in Fairmount Park in 1941
Carl Kuchenbecker was apparently responsible for nine primates disappearing into the woods near Kingsbury Creek during his many years as proprietor of The Same Old Place in West Duluth. The story of a “ringtailed monkey” named Bobby landed on the front page of the Duluth Herald on Oct. 18, 1941.
The newspaper chose to feature a photo of an orangutan, acknowledging it does not represent the primate in question. It is unclear if the term “ringtailed monkey” was referring to a ring-tailed lemur or perhaps a squirrel monkey or some other type of monkey.
