Postcard from the Barney B. Barstow

There isn’t a lot of information online about the Barney B. Barstow of Duluth, featured in this undated postcard published by Gallagher’s Studio of Photography. But there are a few tidbits that suggest the vessel gets its name from a Superior attorney who, according to the June 1969 issue of Maritime Reporter Magazine, was one of eight directors at Fraser Shipyards, serving as secretary.

Barstow died in 1993, according to the obituary of his wife, Helga, who died in 2001. The obit notes they moved to Boca Raton, Florida in 1979.

Update: Thanks to a hot tip in the second comment to this post, which links to the Great Lakes Databases of the Historical Collections of the Great Lakes at Bowling Green State University, we know the Barney B. Barstow was originally named Merchant of St. Marys. It was built in 1957 and took the name Barney B. Barstow in 1960, according the database. It was renamed Phil Milroy in 1978.

Also prominent in the image is the Great Lakes bulk carrier G.A. Tomlinson.

The caption on the back of the postcard reads:

It was named after Barney B. Barstow. That was my grandfather. He passed away in 1993 in Florida.
