Johnson Appliance and TV Center Ghost Sign
Remodeling for the future home of Boreal, a coffee shop, farm-to-table cafe and smoothie and juice bar with intentions of opening in Spring 2017, has revealed the old sign for Johnson Appliance and TV Center.
The building is at 1907 W. Superior St. in Duluth’s friendly West End, next to the former Midway Bar (the blue building on the left) where OMC Smokehouse is also working on a remodel. Design plans for OMC are taped to the front window, but, as seen below, they do not photograph easily in the early evening.

Thom Donaldson of Boreal reports the finding of this old safe in the building.
“Literally weighs a half-ton or more, and was unfortunately empty except for a bunch of old hand-written receipts from the mid-1950s,” Donaldson writes. “Seems the building was once a hardware or general store. The safe is still sitting in the middle of gutted first floor until we figure out what to do with it.
“We found it open. Someone closed it. Now it’s locked.”
