Fifty years ago — Aug. 3, 1965 — the DNT reports on the ongoing Portorama Festival, with the crowning of Miss Seaway VI LaVonne Rae Englund. The “19-year-old hazel-eyed brunette” won the pageant held at Denfeld High School. Runners up were Laurel Josephine Cahill and Joyce Diane Hietalati.

For her talent entry, Miss Englund presented a south sea islands dance wearing a Polynesian costume. During swimsuit competition contestants paraded out over the audience on a 24-foot ramp specially constructed for the pageant.

The three finalists were asked two questions — one serious and one humorous. … To the question, “What would you do at a social event if you discovered you were wearing one black shoe and one brown shoe?,” (Englund) answered: “I’d find the nearest guy who was wearing a brown suit coat and black pants and say we were going together.”
