Vietnamese Iced Coffee

Vietnamese Iced Coffee

My heart broke when the European Bakery closed (though I admit only shopping there once a month wasn’t much help in keeping it open). It relit today.

I had an awesome lunch at Saigon Cafe (114 W First St., Duluth, MN 55802). At $6.99 for all you can eat, the $2.99 for the Vietnamese coffee was an easy treat.

(Vietnamese Coffee is the reason I keep condensed milk at home: also known as ca phe sua da or cà phê sữa dá), it is made with dark roast coffee individually brewed with a small metal French drip filter into a cup containing sweetened condensed milk, stirred and poured over ice.)

We had parked right in front of Lake Superior Coins, so we stopped in. We have a small collection of Vietnamese stamps and would like to have a few Vietnamese coins, too.

No Vietnamese coins in stock, but the owner took the time to talk to us about coin collecting, and we walked out with one of those large folder for collecting the new National Parks quarters. It’s awesome to have a shop like that, run by someone with passion, in town. MWF are the days that the stamp expert is in; we’ll be back.

We skipped, briefly, over to Pineapple — just to look in the window before our meter ran out.

Next week, we’ll be back for lunch at Sammy’s and more excitement on 1st. What do you recommend?

The Vietnamese restaurant on 1st has Vietnamese coffee? Thanks for the 411, Rhetoric Guy, I love it! I knew the Vietnamese place up on Woodland that's now a Thai restaurant would not last long when the waiter tried talking me out of ordering Vietnamese coffee for some odd reason, he said something like Americans don't like it. Sure.

I've never eaten at Saigon Cafe, I will definitely check it out, sounds like a great deal. Sammy's has an excellent lunch buffet, I love their salad bar. Nothing exotic, but it's really good.
