The Grind 2026
Mountain bikers from across the Midwest converge on Giants Ridge for the 11th running of The Grind mountain bike race, one of Minnesota’s premier cross country cycling events.
Known for its rugged terrain, steep climbs and demanding course design, the Grind has built a reputation as one of the toughest mountain bike events in the region.
The 35-mile course winds through Giants Ridge’s renowned trail system, incorporating cross-country ski trails, rugged mining terrain, gravel roads, flowing singletrack and technical features that test riders of all skill levels.
This year’s event once again features race options for a range of abilities including the 19-mile Short Grind to the 5-mile high-energy Junior Grind and the crowd-favorite Miners & Mini-Miners Kids Races, while showcasing the trail network that has helped establish Giants Ridge as one of the Midwest’s top mountain biking destinations.
In addition to race-day action, participants and spectators can enjoy a Vendor Village featuring industry partners, cycling brands and local organizations. Live music adds to the festival atmosphere, creating a full-day experience for riders, families and outdoor enthusiasts.

Perfect Iron Range Restaurant: Vi’s Pizza
Competition was stiff in the Perfect Iron Range Restaurant poll. After a 36-hour, tie-breaking vote we can officially declare Vi’s Pizza in Biwabik the champion.
In the final poll, Vi’s Pizza had 70 percent of the vote, while BoomTown Woodfire Bar & Grill in Eveleth had 30 percent.
Clearly, no ordinary pizza joint could beat the likes of top contenders like BoomTown and Gilbert’s famous Jamaican restaurant, the Whistling Bird. But Vi’s Pizza is a veritable Iron Range institution.
The original pizza recipe was handed down from owner Kim Mattson’s Italian grandmother. Viola “Vi” and her husband Frank Urick started selling takeout pizzas out of the back of their Biwabik home in 1959. (more…)
