Zenith City press publisher Tony Dierckins will present on “Oliver Traphagen: Duluth’s Quintessential Architect” in the Gold Room of the Duluth Public Library’s main branch in downtown Duluth. The event is the first lecture in the library’s new Maryanne Norton Lecture Series. Traphagen designed more than 30 of Duluth’s most ornate brick-and-brownstone buildings, as well as homes for many wealthy Duluthians.

Some of Duluth's premier weirdos stage an immersive multimedia freakout in the old Carlson Bookstore building (206 E. Superior St), now known as Embassy 35. This ceremonious lighting at the Split Rock Lighthouse commemorates the 44th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Donations will be accepted on site and will be used in the year-round upkeep of the light station. All audiences and participants of all capabilities will be welcome. Film and tours detailing the Fitzgerald's historic fate will be available as well.

This exhibition features contemporary Swedish folk paintings by Judith Kjenstad, Pieper Fleck Bloomquist and Alison Aune. The three artists have studied, and transformed, traditional Swedish dalmålningar from Dalarna, with its characteristic floral kurbits (fantastical gourd flowers), and decorative-figurative bonadsmåleri from the southern provinces of Småland and Halland into contemporary paintings. The University of Wisconsin-Superior Visual Arts Department hosts the opening reception for Born to Kill an exhibition exploring the intersection between humor and the visual arts. The exhibition, which runs from Oct. 11 to Nov. 8, will be presented in the Kruk Gallery in the Holden Fine Arts Building on the UWS campus.
