Gaelynn Lea – “In the Bleak Midwinter”
Duluth’s Gaelynn Lea performs the Christmas carol “In the Bleak Midwinter” in this video shot live in her home. The song is on Gaelynn’s 2016 Christmas album Deepest Darkness Brightest Dawn, which features live-looped versions of traditional Christmas carols.
Rich Mattson and the Northstars – “In Flight”
Rich Mattson and the Northstars have a new album set for release on Feb. 5. This homespun video, produced by Reggie Pype, is for the first single, “In Flight.”

Video: Bobcats on the St. Louis River
Duluth’s Mike Mayou captured video of three bobcats on the ice along the St. Louis River on Wednesday. “I happened to spot them from afar,” he wrote on the YouTube description. “After flying a drone over to investigate, I discovered that the three cats were very comfortable being up close and personal with the camera, thus this footage. Enjoy!”
Meteorite Video via Pine County Sheriff’s Office
This dashcam video from the Pine County Sheriff’s Office shows a bright light streaking in the sky at about 6:50 a.m. on Dec. 16 in the vicinity of Denham, about 20 miles southwest of Duluth. (more…)

Singers at the University of Minnesota Duluth overcame great odds this semester during the COVID-19 pandemic. They wore masks and rehearsed online, outdoors and in large lecture halls, ultimately sharing their musical talents in a virtual concert on Nov. 13. Some highlights are in the clip above.
An audience of more than 150 joined together on Zoom to hear the University Singers, Concert Chorale, Chamber Singers, Lake Effect and Chill Factor perform on location in Weber Music Hall, Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, and around Duluth and the UMD Campus.
Michael, Jesus and the Dream Space Capsule from Duluth
The historical TV drama The Right Stuff mentions Duluth in episode 7, which premiered Nov. 13 on the video-on-demand service Disney+. The series is loosely based on the 1979 book by Tom Wolfe. There is also a critically acclaimed 1983 film adaptation of Wolfe’s story.

Duluth’s symbol of 19th Century opulence and 21st Century blight is the subject of this recent aerial video by Jack Rendulich. Pastoret Terrace is best known in modern times as the Kozy Apartments and Bar, which closed after a major fire ten years ago today — Nov. 15, 2010. (more…)

Selective Focus: Uncle Clutch’s Video Horror Shop
In the tradition of campy late night B-movie monster and horror hosts like Elvira, Svengoolie and my personal favorite from Omaha, Nebraska, Dr. Sanguinary’s Creature Feature, the Twin Ports now has a B-movie host to call its own. Joe Klander (previously on PDD) plays the part of Uncle Clutch, his pro wrestling, baby-eating alter ego. He now grumpily operates one of the last video rental stores in the world. (more…)

Excursion to Thomson Dam by Air
Duluth musician and pilot Israel Malachi experimented this past spring with attaching a Go-Pro to the wing of his plane, flying over locations in Duluth and Superior. He also composed music to go with the videos. Above is his flight over Thomson Dam. Malachi’s other videos are on his Israelaeon YouTube channel.
