Robb Stauber: The Goalie Who Never Stayed in His Net
The opinionated hockey YouTube channel “idontgivetkachuk” recently featured Duluth native Robb Stauber in an eight-and-a-half minute video tribute/critique. Slicing together some of the former goaltender’s crazier plays, video creator Paul DeRienzo presents Stauber as a wild and perhaps undisciplined goalie who lived outside the crease. (more…)
Video: Bobcat kittens pestering their mom
A bobcat and her two kittens put on a little show for a Voyageurs Wolf Project trail camera recently. Although the University of Minnesota research project has caught bobcats on camera numerous times, this is the first clip that includes kittens.
Steve’s Overpopulated One-man Band – “Ranger Things”
Straight from the Iron Range comes this Halloween medley by Steve Solkela. The music was recorded at Kaleva Hall in Virginia. The medley includes: “Ranger Things Parody,” “Ghost of John,” “Play that Scary Music Bite Boy,” “Pass the Witch’s Broomstick” and “Zombie Taylor Swift.”
Exploring Nopeming Sanatorium
A few week’s back Duluth Urbex slithered through Nopeming, the former sanatorium located west of Duluth in Midway Township. The resulting video is a perfect primer for the Halloween creeps.
Meredith from Duluth
The neo-noir film Lonely Hearts was released 15 years ago today — Oct. 21, 2006. In the clip above, John Travolta and James Gandolfini — as detectives Elmer Robinson and Charles Hilderbrandt, respectively — disregard a letter from “Meredith from Duluth.”
Charlie Parr – “817 Oakland Avenue”
Duluth’s Charlie Parr released a new album in July — Last of the Better Days Ahead. The video for “817 Oakland Avenue” features animation by Drew Christie.
The Slice: Oh My Gourdness!
Lake Superior Zoo‘s colossal pumpkin arrived Oct. 6. Danny Tanner of Duluth Township provides the zoo with the symbolic Halloween squash each year ahead of the annual Boo at the Zoo events, this year held Oct. 16, 23 and 30.

Reading Sinclair Lewis: Country, Critiques, City Satires
The Minnesota Historical Society produced this video dramatizing excerpts from two of novelist and social critic Sinclair Lewis’ breakthrough works — Babbitt and Main Street. Lewis, of course, went on to become a Duluthian and even kind of almost coined the phrase “perfect Duluth day.”
The program is created and hosted by Craig Johnson and features actors David Beukema, Anna Leverett, Damian Leverett and Melanie Wehrmacher. It was filmed on location in Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sauk Centre.
Moors & McCumber – “There’s Always Something”
Moors & McCumber have a new album coming out Oct. 15 titled Survival. The Moors half of the duo is Superior’s James Moors, who has been performing with Colorado native Kort McCumber since 2005.
The video was produced and directed by Travis Bush.

Alex Lewis – “Rivers and Roads”
Duluth’s Alex Lewis covers the song “Rivers and Roads” in this video produced for Mentor North by DanSan Creatives. The song was composed by the Head and the Heart and appeared on the band’s self-titled album, released in 2011.
Duluth Pack on Good Morning America
Strangely, or maybe not surprisingly, this Good Morning America feature feels more like a tourism commercial than a news package, but oh well. The opening scenes are in the Twin Cities, Duluth Pack is featured at the 3:03 mark and Split Rock Lighthouse gets some love at the end.

Birder Richard Hoeg was in Sax-Zim Bog last week and observed an interesting tightrope act. He assembled 95 photos into this clip, showing a great grey owl training for the circus.

Duluth-based hip-hop artist Zachary Moder, aka MN Moder, has a new video for a not-so-new song. “4/20” is from his 2019 album Modervation.

Duluth’s Anthony Bennett presents this cover of the classic A.J McLean song “Damn, Duluth,” from the forthcoming compilation album Duluth Does Damn Duluth.

AJ Mclean praises and damns Duluth on TikTok
AJ Mclean, the singer, actor, dancer and model best known as a member of the Backstreet Boys, was in Duluth this weekend for a wedding, according to videos on TicTok. In his first Duluth post, from the edge of Lake Superior, he notes he has “never seen something so serene and beautiful” in all his life and calls it “a little taste of heaven.” In the second post, however, he’s a bit miffed that there are no Ubers available.
