PDD Shop Talk: WordPress theme conversion completed
Perfect Duluth Day underwent a massive data migration and WordPress theme conversion this weekend. The result should be mostly good stuff and probably a little bit of temporarily bad stuff.
On the positive side, the site should look a little cleaner but still operate very much like it has in the past. Certain problems we’ve been struggling with on the backend of the site, particularly with image uploads, should now be resolved.
On the negative side, there are still a few little things we need to work on. And, of course, there might be hidden problems we haven’t found yet. That’s where you can help. If you notice anything buggy, please send an email to paul @ perfectduluthday.com and we will quickly assess the situation and then take an obscenely long time to fix it.
Congratulations! Looks good – I only see the plus sides at the moment but I’ll keep an eye out for the bugs.
And I see right away that I can reply to a specific comment. In this case my own. That’s new.

This reply-to-a-specific-comment feature is indeed new, but not exactly new. It’s always been (or has long been) an option in WordPress and I think comes by default. We had comments set up like this at one point long ago and people didn’t like it for two reasons:
1) Some people inadvertently replied where they didn’t intend to, creating confusing comment sequences.
2) In lengthy comment threads that people want to follow along with, it’s easier to scroll to the bottom and pick up where you left off without having to look for replies inserted above where you’ve already read.
For now I think we’ll stick with this system for a while and see how it goes in 2026 vs. 2009 or whenever that other experiment happened.

My comment on the Underwood coffee post last week doesn’t show the image I uploaded… do you think that was a one-off or did something wonky happen with images on comments?

Images in comments were one of the more tricky things we had to deal with in this migration. I think there have been three different plugins used to upload images to comments on PDD over the years, and many other images in the comments were hard-coded in.
I think we managed to get 99 percent of comment images figured out, but this recent example is one that didn’t work for whatever reason. I have fixed it now, though, so it does work.
Basically, as far as this issue goes, the best thing to do is let me know when an image is missing and I’ll do my best to track it down and get it reinserted.
