Writers, Artists and a Culture of Creativity in the Loch

Chance Lasher and Justin O. Rose meet to talk writing, art and creativity at the Loch game shop and cafe.

I visited the Loch on June 6 for an event celebrating and cultivating creativity. The event was sponsored by the Duluth Failed Poets Society.

The highlight, for me, was meeting Justin O. Rose. Justin is the author of two series of fantasy: the First Immortals series and the Nations End series. He is, just as impressively, in many ways, editor of a collection of Midwest fantasy. Editors are my favorite people — they know the value of platforming a community of writers.

Rose is, like most local authors, an engine of enthusiasm — you have to love your own work as much as anyone else can, so that you can share that love with a future reader. He’s also innovative. He kickstarted a full-cast audio drama of his work, “Fall of Ingway.” I picked up the audiodrama, which looks like it’s a cassette, but is in fact a USB drive, carefully masked. I look forward to listening soon. You can catch an interview with Rose at krsolberg.com.

But the event included more — poems by Anastasia Bamford, copies and art from the Murder Your Darlings collection, and tables for poetry-making, zine-making and more. It was a great evening and I look forward to more.
