Postcard from the ‘new Alworth Building’
This postcard was mailed 115 years ago today — March 10, 1910. It shows the “new Alworth Building” at 306 W. Superior St., which was indeed new; the postcard was mailed two months before construction of the building was completed.
The 16-story Alworth Building was Duluth’s tallest skyscraper until 2023, when the 18-story Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center opened. The 11-story Maurices Headquarters, completed in 2016, is Duluth’s third-tallest commercial high-rise.
The card was sent to M.L. Bartholomew of Cadillac, Mich. The message on the back reads:
This is the Lonsdale on the left and Torry the second to the right. We are having fine weather.
