Local student profiles local author Amy Jo Swing

NorthWords, the monthly publication of Lake Superior Writers, features a link to Joseph Bussey’s profile of local author Amy Jo Swing.

Joseph interviewed Amy Jo Swing as part of WRIT 2106 Minnesota Writers: Reading Like a Writer at UMD, a course which introduces writing majors to Minnesota writers. In addition to studying their published writing, the students also learn about their composing processes and the processes of publishing their works. The long term-goal of the course is to help students begin positioning themselves as a writer.

Joseph Bruce Bussey, Jr. is working on his English degree at the University of Minnesota Duluth. He’s best known for his poetry and essays, receiving praise from scholars and dreamers alike for his adherence and command of words. Talkative and outgoing, Joseph doesn’t shy away from getting to know someone, saying, “Everyone is their own poem.” Outside of his writing projects, Joseph likes to take long walks in the Lester woods, listen to all kinds of music, and be there for his Lakeside community.

I'm always looking for additions to my impossible to catch up with reading list, so I appreciate you sharing here discussions about writers that come up in your courses.

Reading about this particular poet led me to seek out the poems themselves, which I quite enjoyed. The author does a reading of all three poems discussed in the interview at ampers.org.
