Mystery Photo: Western Duluth and God’s Favorite Band

Twin/Tone Records, a Minneapolis-based record label active from 1977 to 1994, has an artist page for God’s Favorite Band that features the image above.

It appears to be guitarist/bassist/singer Chris Benson wearing a T-shirt with the words “Western Duluth.” It looks like there are more words lower down on the shirt.

Does anyone know the story behind the shirt? Was it made to promote the old Western Bar or Western Café or Western Hotel at 2803 W. Superior St.? Or is it a shirt promoting the western side of Duluth in general? And did God’s Favorite Band have a Duluth connection? It’s obviously likely the band at least played a Duluth gig.
