Lake Superior Brewing to open soon; no beer until Labor Day

A specific date hasn’t been set, but WDIO-TV reports that Lake Superior Brewing will open soon. It will initially be just a restaurant and bar, however. The brewery’s beer won’t be ready until September. “Hopefully by Labor Day,” co-owner Sarah Maxim told WDIO.

Lake Superior Brewing will be the first full-service bar to operate in Duluth’s Lakeside neighborhood. Amity Coffee became the neighborhood’s first seller of over-the-counter alcohol in 2016 after the Duluth City Council repealed a more than 125-year-old neighborhood liquor ban.

Sarah and her husband Seth Maxim purchased the Lake Superior Brewing Company business in 2020, along with the former Xcel Xercise and Sun City Tanning building at 5324 E. Superior St. Lake Superior Brewing had previously operated in the King Building, a strip mall at 27th Avenue West and Superior Street in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. Warrior Brewing opened in the former Lake Superior Brewing space in 2021.

The original Lake Superior Brewing was founded in 1994 and went on to produce roughly 1,200 to 2,000 barrels of craft beer per year for most of its initial run, which ended in 2019.

Seth Maxim operated the small-batch microbrewery at Duhb Linn Irish Pub until the steam service that provided the hot-water system in the building was removed as part of the Superior Street reconstruction project. When Dubh Linn ceased brewing operations, Seth and his wife Sarah made the decision to buy Lake Superior Brewing, where he will serve as the head brewer.
