Mystery Photo: Mr. & Mrs. Burchell

From the back of this cabinet card photo we know the subjects are Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Burchell or Burehell, married Aug. 26, 1891. They were also presumably residents of West Duluth. The photo is from the Downtown Duluth studio of John R. Zweifel.

That’s what we know. Everything else is a mystery.

I think the name is Burchell. Presbyterians in Duluth went to the Iron Range in the early 1890s, looking for a place to build a church. They decided on Virginia and a church there was formed in April 1893. On Oct. 4, 1894, Herbert Burchell and wife of Duluth were listed as members. Virginia public school minutes from the early 1900s show a Herbert Burchell submitting bills as the school carpenter. His wife's name at the time of marriage was Mary Frances Curnow. She went to a Virginia City Council meeting once and raised hell about saloons not following the rules. They had 8 children from 1893 to 1905: Luella, Albert, Herbert, Bert, Mabel, Gertrude, Henry and Reginald. Looks like there are still some Burchells around in Virginia.
