Postcard from Paul Bunyan Bar & Grill

This undated postcard, published by Kaeser & Blair of Cincinnati, Ohio, depicts interior and exterior scenes at the Paul Bunyan Bar & Grill in Downtown Duluth.

The bar operated at 216 W. Superior St. from the early 1940s until the mid 1980s, offering “the finest in foods and liquors, in the heart of the shopping district.”

Some of the bar’s representatives listed in city directories include James Carlos, Gerald E. LeBeau, Mike A. Minotte, Nisius Kermit Knotsh and Bernie Tyacke. Lester Lofdahl was the bar owner and Paul Mayersak was the building owner when the city began condemnation proceedings in 1985 to acquire the building for use as a Duluth Transit Authority Transportation Center. The building to the east, at 214 W. Superior St., was also acquired for the transportation center. It was home to Lindor Piano and Organ before that.
