Servant-Leader and Artist

Jan Carlson Carey

My friend Jan Carlson Carey and I served on the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council at the time of its immense growth. I was the at-large Duluth representative, and Jan represented the Iron Range, more or less.

In all those five years, I never knew she was a talented painter in her own right.

So I want to place a special nod to Jan today. She’ll be showing work at Security State Bank-Hibbing starting next week for the month of January. February she’ll show all month at Sunrise Bakery‘s new location in Hibbing (it’s very nice). In May, she’ll be back at 47degrees when the gallery in Knife River reopens.

Minnesota is a special place; arts funding is plentiful. There is nearly as much money for art in the seven-county Arrowhead region as in entire other states. ARAC recently developed an “Access Grant” for those trying to secure funding for the first time. You can swing by their office for help from their new grants manager.

I guess today I learned of exciting initiatives at ARAC and I thought I should nod to one of the regional leaders who made those initiatives possible, without once showing off her own skill.
