They Might be Giants – “Rabid Child”

The alternative rock band They Might be Giants dropped a reference to Duluth on its self-titled debut album in 1986. Whether “the Big Duluth” mentioned in the lyrics to “Rabid Child” is supposed to be a clothing store or the nickname of a person or what, well, that’s up to the listener.

Sign for “The Big Duluth,” for sale at Father Time Antiques in Canal Park.

Rabid child stays at home, talks on a CB
Truckers pass calling out their handles to the kid
Chess Piece Face and the Big Duluth call her every day
“Hammer down” and “rabbit ears” are the only words they know

According to “This Might be a Wiki: The TMBG Knowledge Base,” the song originated on a demo cassette in 1985.

The band also apparently made a music video for “Rabid Child” that was never released. But there are a few fan-made videos available on YouTube.
