Duluth-area Radio Station Guide for 2018

The Duluth/Superior radio market is noted for two striking characteristics — an uncommon number of public-interest stations and an uncommon number of Christian stations. The commercial broadcast signals that fill out the rest of dial are mostly owned by two entities — Midwest Communications and Townsquare Media — although there are a few smaller station owners, like Northwoods Radio and Twin Ports Radio.

This post reminded me of when I was camping in 2001 at Big Blaze Campground (remember that?) between Duluth and Two Harbors. The only radio stations I could get on my portable radio were a country station and Minnesota Public Radio. The 9/11 World Trade Center attacks had just happened, and I heard about it on MPR. I spent the whole morning at my picnic table, transfixed listening to the reports, trying to understand the details and the scope of it.

Townsquare Media has announced that on Feb. 1, 2020, it will begin operating WWAX-FM 92.1 under a time brokerage agreement with Twin Ports Radio. Townsquare and Twin Ports Radio expect to enter an agreement whereby Townsquare will acquire WWAX.

WWAX currently broadcasts the FAN Radio Network and local sports programming. Townsquare plans to move the FAN and all sports programming to WEBC 560 AM and 106.5 FM during the week of Feb. 17.

WEBC will also carry local sports broadcasting featuring regular-season and playoff high school football and hockey games, and Grandma’s Marathon.

Sasquatch will move its classic rock format from 106.5 FM to 92.1 FM as "Sasquatch 92-1."

Townsquare has also acquired the Duluth/Superior radio broadcast rights for Minnesota Vikings football games for the 2020-2024 seasons. The broadcasts will air on both WEBC and WWAX.
