Writer Reads … in Ashland and on the Radio

Duluth authors Avesa Rockwell, Lucie Amundsen and other Duluthians I don’t know all read in the annual “Writer’s Read” event at Northland College on Jan. 26.

Avesa’s memoir, Children of the Earth, was selected by judges for its relevance to this year’s theme of “gut instinct.” Her story describes a disturbing incident from her adolescence in New Mexico and the tension between acquiring wisdom and maintaining innocence.

Parts of the event were broadcast on Wisconsin Public Radio in February. Avesa starts about 35 minutes in.

Avesa is Associate Writing Program Administrator and Writing Studies faculty member at UMD, as well as a cool person.

I know other Duluthians were there, but I can’t recognize all their voices against my map of Duluth writers in my head. Can other people help me identify the Duluthians at the event?

Thank you, David! I was only one of many other Duluth writers, including (left to right in the photo) Lucie B. Amundsen, Maddie Cohen, Avesa Rockwell, Molly Hoeg, Felicia Schneiderhan, Marie Zhuikov, Carol Dunbar, and Liz Minette (not pictured).

You can listen to the second installment at wpr.org.
