From the Ripsaw Archive: April 5, 2000

Ten years ago today, the first weekly issue of the Ripsaw came out. Looking it over this morning, the thing that surprised me is there was a localized crossword puzzle. I had forgotten about that. It only lasted a few months because the guy who did it, Israel Malachi, either got tired of putting it together or left town for a while, I can’t remember which.

Anyway, the puzzle is below. It’s pretty easy, but I’ll follow up with the answer key in the comments tomorrow.

HA, 9 down - Downtown Duluth's "library" - that's great!

This is pretty cool. Creating crossword puzzles is tougher than it looks. One of my first jobs after college was proofreading crossword puzzles for Running Press -- it gave me a great appreciation for the art of creating them.

Hi,

Localized crossword puzzles are pretty cool. Those ones in the Ripsaw must have been fun to look forward to. Wendy G has done a couple localized crossword puzzles for The Hillsider. I would be open to anyone who wanted to create one for us.

Israel left town for a while, if I remember correctly. He also used to do bizarro cartoons (more coming soon). He currently plays in the Tico Three along with some other Gremmelian band, I think.
