Two weeks ago the Duluth News Tribune told the story of Jeffrey Xu, an engineer designing a new airplane for Cirrus Aircraft … and also designing a “jacket for the legs.” Now there’s a week left in Xu’s Kickstarter campaign, and he’s got $15,000 to go to fund his “Pants-on-Pants” enterprise. Sonofmel & the Slideman – “Kissing Eve”
Sometimes it takes traveling far from home to find out where you come from. Sonofmel & the Slideman have farmed decades of life into a harvest of sounds, growing rows of song and spoken word around dreamscapes rich enough to farm. They’ve just begun an album together at Sacred Heart Studio and will debut one or two during a Jan. 17 performance at Bent Paddle Brewing.

Dawn LaPointe and Gary Fiedler of Radiant Spirit Gallery captured the Joseph L. Block emerging through the sea smoke like a ghost. The morning temperature was -20°F with a -40°F windchill. The video was processed at an 8x speed.

Timothy Johnson of Whitespace Films was on Lake Superior’s North Shore over Christmas, when the temperature was around -20 °F. “This video shows just some of the beauty that can emerge from, and because of, the cold,” Johnson writes on the YouTube description.

Duluth weather on CBS This Morning
Duluth appeared briefly on CBS This Morning‘s story “Heavy snow and winds wreak havoc for holiday travelers.” At the 1:46 mark in the video above, Duluth is shown as reporter DeMarco Morgan notes “Minnesota had windchills as cold as 35 degrees below zero.” (CBS forces a commercial at the front of the video; PDD apologizes for it.)

The clip was featured on PDD once before, just a year ago, when actress Carrie Fisher died. Today we roll it out again to mark the 40th anniversary of the day the original Star Wars movie closed in Duluth — Dec. 22, 1977. It was screened 459 times during a 191-day run.
