Ted Kooser is coming to Duluth

Mark your calendars for April 30. Ted Kooser, the former US Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner will read from his work on Saturday, April 30, at Somers Lounge, CSS. 7:30 pm. FREE! Check out his website at He’s the author of many books of poems, several children’s books, and a terrific book to help aspiring poets called the Poetry Home Repair Manual. You won’t want to miss this reading! It’s co-sponsored by Spirit Lake Poetry Series and the Arrowhead Library System, with funds from ARAC and the Heritage Amendment. Please come!

Poems about Pizza and Farm Equipment is a Spirit Lake Poetry Series event featuring two writers:

Michelle Matthees has three collections, “Served” “Outside” and “Junket.” She was a 2009 Jerome/SASE Emerging Writer and her work has been in “The Bloomsbury Review,” “Hayden’s Ferry Review,” “PANK,” “The Bellingham Review” and other journals.

Joyce Sutphen grew up on a farm near St. Joseph, Minn., and that is the impetus for her collection “First Words.” She also wrote “Naming the Stars,” which won a Minnesota Book Award and “Straight out of View,” which won the Barnard New Women Poets Prize in 1994. She has been a guest on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion.”

Spirit Lake Poetry Series reading coming up

On November 13, Jude Nutter and Thomas R. Smith will read at Somers Lounge, CSS, for free.  7:30 pm.  

Jude won last year’s MN Book Award in poetry with a terrific book called I Wish I Had a Heart Like Yours, Walt Whitman. She was raised on the grounds of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany, and the poems in this book concern some of that experience.  

Also reading is Thomas R. Smith, who has a brand new book from Red Dragonfly Press called The Foot of the Rainbow.  Don’t miss this reading — it’ll be great.  Oh, and Spirit Lake now has a website:
