Duluthophilia

This popped up in my Facebook feed.

I mean, Master Card’s little contest might pale in comparison to the intense fervor, Duluthophilia, I call it, that some of us have for this town. Heck, this blog is basically all about how great we think we are (except for the bitching posts, which are still pretty much about how great we think we are.)

I’d love to hear some of your little things that you love about Duluth, whether you use the Master Charge incorporated #LoveThisCity hashtag on social media or not, share them here, will you?

My contributions to Duluthophilia are modest, this hasn’t been updated much lately but I do have a little Pinterest board by that name and I have some images and things there that scream “I love Duluth.” Duluth-o-philia

Also, again I have not done much of this lately, but I am an avid watcher of the #dlh hashtag on twitter, which all the cool social media Duluth-o-philes use.

So, who’s up for a Duluth love fest?

3 hour run = at least 2 hours of trails.

That was supposed to be a Gravatar. Sorry.

That photo of Eric Chandler should be the official logo of the City of Dultuh.

I posted this photo on Facebook today, with the caption, “I love my city. I really do.”

DNT posted it this morning. Credit and props to Andrew Krueger.

Pretty much sums it up. Beautiful, interesting, unique, the lake and the lake and the lake. All that on an average Wednesday night in December.

I like all the hot waitresses here. Duluth has a lot of sexy people considering how many of them are toothless . I like that you can drink beer here too in over half the city.
And I enjoy the industrial facet of the harbor while driving over the Blatnik. There’s a cold naked beauty in all that machinery and concrete, and it really pops with the lake as a backdrop.

I’m thrilled to live in a town with ski trails, mountain bike trails, and hiking trails criss-crossing half the city.

I like that I can get on my bike in my urban neighborhood and be hauling out on little-traveled rural roads in a matter of minutes.

I like that we can drag our $40 beater canoe down to the mouth of the Lester and be paddling on the big lake any time the spirit moves us.

I like going to the Firehouse Beach on Park Point and going for a bracing/freezing swim on a hot July day.

I like the fact that Charles McGrath was wrong about outdoor skating in THIS part of Minnesota.

I like the fact that in a town the same size as the suburb I grew up in, I seem to know 3x more people than I ever did back then, and regularly run into them all over town.

I like having a variety of options for locally-brewed beer.

I like living in a place where people believe in the political process and participate actively.

And I like that our kids think it’s normal to ski, hike, camp, paddle, climb trees, swim, and so on because their friends are more or less stuck doing all that stuff too.

    Pretty sure that’s Frisco, Claire.

I like Big E’s whole list. These are all great. YES Claire that is some other town, not Duluth but I wish it was Jessige’s pic. You get bonus points for talking Duluth way way up as an Art Hound today, though! I heard it on both commutes AM & PM. I’m not sure how serious Herz is, but the combination of gritty and sublime scenery on the Blatnik is something that I do love. We’re not a tourist posertown, people do real hard work here still today. As nearly all of our recent ancestors did.

That did look kind of like Duluth till I put my glasses on. Looking at it on a phone screen didn’t help. I still prefer looking at our harbor.

I like walking around on the rocky, exposed escarpment between Skyline Parkway and West Third Street, overlooking the Garfield Avenue industrial zone. It’s like flying, man.

Andrew Krueger and Clint Austin get to work with Bob King. Bob King got to work with Chuck Curtis. We are very lucky to have such great photographers out there capturing these moments.

I love that we have had an anonymous bouquet of flowers on our front doorstep every May 1st since we moved here.

Big E’s list is spot on. To add to that, I love my hometown the new generation of young people who are seeing its unique beauty and have the willingness and the fortitude (that my generation did not have) to ‘stake their claim’ here and invest in Duluth. Thank you.

Everything, anything, and our Duluth CEO, DON DONNNNYYYYY NESS! WOOO

  19. Herzog Herzog on December 15, 2012 at 10:42 am

I’m always serious. Blatnik has a bitchin’ view, the industrial view wouldn’t be so great if it hadn’t been so worked in by history. I gave that as my official reason of why I drove over to the Pagan one time, and they looked at me like I was weird. As for the hot waitresses, who disagrees? Granted, there are no waitresses in Lakeside, but who’s counting?

    Claire FTW yet again.
