My wife and I noticed an unusual amount of debris on the shore Saturday morning — lots of shards of glass, clinkers, ceramic, etc. Why now? Was a shipwreck dredged up?
I am going to guess that it’s all from the June flooding and then the huge winds we had last week. I was out on a sail boat near Bayfield a month after the storm and there was floating debris all over the place; from Duluth’s flood. So, I know there was an increase in floating debris last summer, and I imagine the winds kicked a lot of it back up. I’m just guessing, of course, but I haven’t heard of a recent shipwreck.
The November storms are always strong, and the winds tend to kick up debris from the floor of the lake. Considering how much was flushed out into the lake during the floods, this is not unexpected.
PS: Sorry for the nasty tone, burnettd. You were probably just stressing how interesting the lake is. We found it unique to encounter so much stuff in a 10-minute walk. There were also a bunch of dead minnows that we thought were trout but might well have been baby whales for all we know. I think the answer to the question about what caused the unusual amount of debris is: wind.

Most certainly the flood.

Looks like pretty average findings from a walk on the beach, to me.

Well, a combination of the flood and the wind, but yeah.
