I was wondering where in the heck a person buys a Christmas tree in Duluth these days? It’s not exactly something you can look up online as far as I know … PDD’s help is greatly appreciated!

I was thinking the same thing today. These are the places I found:
Farmer’s Market on 14th Avenue East & Third Street
Mount Royal Fine Foods parking lot
St. Michael’s Church yard (in Lakeside)
The Farmer’s Market was the cheapest — $30 trees. But last year we bought a tree at Menard’s for about $15. Because I’m cheap and space is limited at my house, I opted for a very little spruce I found in the entrance of Mount Royal grocery store for $7.99.
We like Pappy’s Trees on Morris Thomas if you’re in the Piedmont area. It’s in his front yard and he’s got a lot more character than other places. The insurance place on lower Piedmont (around 23rd?) has them too, and the Milk House has a few but they’re between $40-50 there.
The problem we ran into was timing – it seems like they all close at dark.
We went to the Farmers Market at 5:30 pm tonight, but they had gone home already, so we went to Mt Royal’s parking lot. The trees were OK — nothing amazing. But we got a cute tree for $35. We asked the guy for string to tie the tree to the car, and he wasn’t sure he had any — though he did produce some. That surprised us that he wasn’t sure he had string.

I come from a family where we didn’t put up a tree until the Sunday before Christmas and kept it up and decorated for the entirety of Christmas, thus taking it down on January 6.
This town makes it hard to buy a tree and recycle a tree with that timeframe.
We had to go over the bridge this weekend to Dan’s Feed Bin and picked up a tree while we were there. $35 for a beautiful 7′ Balsam Fir.
We bought ours Sunday at the Farmer’s Market. It couldn’t have been easier and more pleasant. The trees are inside which makes shopping at least a little warmer and the owners/help are so nice. Once you choose your tree, they shake it (very cool which I’ve never seen before), trim it, wrap it in netting and tie it on top of your car. There is a price range so you can find one that suits your budget. Best of all, the trees are grown locally and harvested just before Thanksgiving so they’re not dry and dropping needles all over the place which has been our experience in past years. I don’t know why we never went there before, but it is the place. We’ll be going from now on!
Marian, I agree, I had a pleasant experience last year at the Farmer’s Market, I even bought some maple syrup from the guy selling the trees! And I recall his helping us put the tree on top of the car, which the guy at Mt Royal last night didn’t bother doing (but at least he found us string!). I’ll just have to go to the Farmers Market earlier in the day next year. There’s definitely a difference.
If you want to cut your own, you can get a permit to harvest one in the Superior National Forest.
We cut our own out in Carlton at Chub Lake Tree Farm. Very nice trees!
We ended up going to Home Depot to pick up ours the other night. Thanks to everyone for their kind suggestions! We got a beautiful 7 ft fir for 16 bucks!

There is a guy who has a tree farm on Homestead Rd in Lakewood. He used to have the stand in the London Rd Burger King lot but I don’t think he is there this year. You can still cut your own at his place though. I think they are $25, but it may have gone up from last year.
We went with a Siberian fir this year. A big full 7 footer that smells like tangerines. I think it’s gotta be the best tree we’ve had yet. ‘Spensive, but totally worth it.
Kudos to the Farmer’s Market folks (who also run the feed bin tree lot)!
One more kudo to the Farmer’s Market trees, in addition to being locally gown, they use no pesticides or chemical fertilizer. We are definitely happy with the tree we got there.
@zra I liked the tangerine smelling ones, but was outvoted in our house for a traditional smelling one.

Not to rub it in this year, but we go every year and cut down a spindly balsam fir for $8 out at Boulder Lake. There’s always next year if that’s up your alley.
@ Doug: I wanted one last year, but conceded my choice in favor of the Missus’ selection on the promise that we get the Siberian (tangerine) this year.
Ironic1, my mother came from a family that put up its Christmas tree on Christmas Even and left it up until Epiphany, January 6. That’s kinda British tradition. When you’re in the land of Scandinavians you kinda get used to people putting up the tree as soon as they can. One year I looked out my window on Christmas morn and my neighbors had already put their Christmas tree to the cub!

We have small trees, tall trees, balsam, fraser, Siberian, and a new exotic called concolor fir. There are only a few of the concolors, so get in early to see them. You can get all your greens, garland, wreaths, boughs, spruce tips, kissing balls, princess pine, and of course we still have a freezer full of our home grown chickens.
If we don’t see you this weekend, not to worry, we will be there until Christmas.

There’s a really lopsided one down on the corner of Lake Avenue and Superior Street. Looks like it’s ready to fall over at any moment, so I don’t think anyone would mind if you took it.
