Doin’ the wash
Where’s a good Laundromat in Duluth? I live in the Central Hillside, but am willing to travel a bit. I was using the one next to Burrito Union, but my clothes seem to smell after washing them there. The new Maytag place on 4th Street is nice, although spendy (and usually busy). What do you suggest?
I like Dee Independent on Superior St. around 11th Ave East. My runners-up are your current laundromat and the one on Central Avenue. I found the ‘washbasin’ or whatever, on West Third St., slightly less friendly. I wouldn’t go back there. Dee Independent is the best.
New Maytag place has “save .50 cents” wednesdays on certain washers and dryers.
I have only been there once, but I liked the one in Woodland, across from the hardware store and in front of the car wash. I washed my car while the laundry was washing. The dryers were very hot and I thought a really good deal. It was clean. Don’t know the name of it though, but just off of Woodland Ave.
Dee Independent was always my choice when I had to use a laundromat. If you sit in the right spot while waiting for your cloths to wash, you are also pretty much guaranteed to see at least one person trip on a certain section of their floor.
Dee Independant for years now. Tripped more than once myself.

The one in Woodland is Judy’s Soap Box, I believe. I’ve never been to any other local laundromats, but Judy’s has a pleasantly mind-numbing atmosphere that I like.
The one up by Menards in Hermantown has a bar attached.

Is there still a Laundromat attached to the Temple Bar in Superior?
I love the Wash Bucket next to Harrison Community center in Lincoln Park. It’s owned by a friendly Greek man who is full of tales – some fictional. There’s free coffee & donuts on Sundays and if there is ever a problem, you can call him and he’ll drive from his home in Esko to solve it.
It used to be called “Julie’s Wash Bucket” but Greek man says he dropped the Julie after his divorce. His wife says that’s a crock of Sh$#.
The Soap ‘n Suds out in Gary is the best laundromat in the area. It’s dirt cheap, open 24/7, and is rarely busy. I only reveal this information because I now live an apartment building with same-floor laundry facilities–otherwise, I was determined to keep it a secret. It is the only laundromat I’ve found around here that is open 24 hours–which is odd, considering my very small hometown in Wisconsin has, like, four all-night laundromats.
Anyway, the Soap ‘n Suds is totally worth the long haul out to Gary. I highly recommend it.
As usual, PDD is so helpful and timely. The bearings on our washing machine went out this weekend.
I’ve been to many of these laundromats, I might have to check out the ones I didn’t know about.
Kenwood Laundromat is nice, space-aged, even. 1330 West Arrowhead Road
Kenwood Laundromat rocks. Do all laundromats do this now –> you get a card and add money to the card via debit/credit card? No more quarters.
Also very clean machines and a tidy waiting room.
I’ve also used the one by the Piggly Wiggly but the one in Kenwood is just so much better.

But if your issue is smell, good luck. I’ve never been to a laundromat where someone didn’t come in and devour a bag of McDonald’s food, permeating my nice clean clothes with greasy fast-food odor.
When I lived in Seattle, I used to do my laundry at a place down the street form my building in Belltown called Sit and Spin. Essentially, it was a laundromat with a cafe attached that sold coffee, light fare (soups, sandwiches, etc) and beer. It also boasted board games, funky sparkle vinyl booth benches and regular poetry slams fuckalls.
What a concept.
I like the one in Woodland, too, across from Denny’s Hardware. Clean, lots of magazines, well attended, usually easy to find free machines, nice folding tables, and usually someone interesting to chat with while you watch the dryers going round and round …
Do they still have birds above the washers and dryers in the one next to B. Union? It was always dirty (20 years ago) when I used it. Although I still take the heavy stuff to a laundry. Dee is good for dry cleaning but the w & d’s are old. Maytag is newer and cleaner than most but often busy except for early and late. There’s one on 9th street and its owned by a guy who live across the street. Independent business, so you could support the little guy?
I always liked the little one on east 9th street near 8th ave. It always felt super clean even though if one other person was in there it felt crowded.
When I lived in Superior I always did the Temple bar with my buddy. He joked that Bar/Laundromat’s wear a vicious cycle since he would go to wash the sheets he pissed in because he was super drunk, then, at the Temple, he would get so drunk that later that night he would piss his bed again making another trip to the Laundromat a necessity.
Smart business plan
The Wash Bucket in Lincoln park is the best one by far. The Russian man that owns it is extremely friendly, and you can sometimes catch a game of cribbage with him. I would never go anywhere else.
I know this post is ancient, but I just wanted to mention that I went to Dee Independent for the first time today. I totally tripped over that certain section in the floor.
