Recovering from Christmas (seen in Duluth)
A couple of items that struck me today. People apparently just dump their old trees in the Mount Royal Shopping center parking lot. And this sign didn’t seem to be doing much to stop them.
I also have been seeing a lot of construction equipment out clearing sidewalks. Near as I can tell about 2/3 of the city is covered in 2 inches of ice. Beneath the snow, that is.
You have never heard a sound more awesome than that of an upright Christmas tree on fire. We’ve burned a couple at Frozen Man, and they’ve gone up in about, oh, 3 seconds with a “WOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH!!”
Sounds like there may be a Frozen Man this year in Feb. Eric Smith’s g/f’s place outside of Superior. Ask Lefty.
If I remember right, they used to chip Christmas trees and dispose of them at a site right across from the Mount Royal USPS Station….perhaps people are hold on to distant memories of days gone past?

I am ok with having Christmas Tree bonfires, but with all the talk of carbon sequestration and global warming, it’s probably not that great for the environment. Maybe they should be dumped on area lakes. When Spring comes they will fall in, along with anything else on the ice. Apparently the lack of dead trees is bad for aquatic wild life. And people don’t kill them like they used to now that houses ring every lake of any size from here to the boundary water …
Bah! The environment? With all the wood stoves in the north country, I don’t think you really need to worry about one or two Christmas trees.
They put out a big dumpster at Mt. Royal, but also left the sign up. Mixed signals?
JP: If you want to be worried about global climate change, I’d start with not cutting down trees for Christmas.

I know it sounded that way, Adam. But I was just being contrary. In reality, I’m not really worried about it. It’s not high on my radar. We have an old, small artificial tree this year that we inherited from someone. I had to modify the cracked base to make it stand properly, and also I needed it to be baby proof, that worked. I am ok with its carbon foot print. I am also ok with live trees, cut trees, the works, basically.
What I originally found noteworthy is how people would leave trees there, in spite of the big sign saying “don’t leave trees here”
I also think its amusing that there is so much heavy equipment moving around town clearing ice and hard packed snow. Nothing else seems to work very well.
Ironic, since you CAN dump Christmas trees at several local parks.
