Fishing hole?

I am looking for a family-friendly place to fish from shore. Somewhere relatively close to Duluth would be best. Any suggestions?

I think it’s fun to fish under the Blatnik Bridge. Kids would get a kick out of seeing the boats pass by, and it’s a lot less congested than Canal Park. Plenty of parking, too.

    Lesterlynn,
That sounds really neat. How do I get under the bridge? Garfield? (I’m kinda new to the area)

There are a lot of nice spots along the St. Louis River in Duluth’s Fond du Lac neighborhood. Check out Chambers Grove Park, by Highway 23 & 137th Ave. W. (far western edge of the city).

People fish in Hartley pond. Actually saw someone catch a fish (surprisingly big) for the first time the other day.

Yep, if you just take Garfield down toward Port Termimal, there’s a big parking lot and boat landing on the right, directly across from the U.P.S. buildings. There’s some kind of wooden structure (maybe an old railroad trestle?) under the High Bridge that you can walk on out part way over the water, so you don’t even have to just stay on the shore. It’s a fun place.

I hope the fishing is decent for you!

I would suggest grabbing a couple of fishing poles, a container of nightcrawlers and a walk into Hartley Pond. Fished there as a kid, some 35 years ago, and it’s a blast for the little ones (I don’t think adults can fish there). Plus, I think the DNR stocks trout in there every spring. It’s a fantastic experience, for kid and parent alike. Enjoy and remember.

Check out the French River where it meets Lake Superior, on Scenic Highway 61.

In Morgan Park, the Clyde Avenue boat landing has a fishing pier.

I grew up shore fishing from Rice Lake dam and have loads of great memories. That being said I have caught more fish from shore from Fish Lake dam. You also might want to try Boulder Lake. If you are ever in the Ely area, Fenske Lake on the Echo Trail has a great fishing dock and a nice swimming beach. The camp ground is very nice as well.
