The water is 32 degrees
Two canoeists paddled into the Duluth Ship Canal Thursday morning. They took turns standing up in the canoe, getting out and standing on a chunk of ice. They took photos of each other.
Conditions in the canal are river-like, with water being funneled through the narrow space, creating strong currents and sloshing water. A chunk of ice this small could tilt or break.
If a person falls into 32-degree water, the immediate gasp reflex could cause them to inhale water. They could become paralyzed as blood rushes away from their arms and legs. They could be dead in 15 minutes.
Fortunately, they got back in and paddled away. But my coworkers and I were ready to call 911.
