R.I.P. Dave Hill

Legendary sound designer Dave Hill passed away recently. Driving by his humble-looking shop/studio in the East End of Superior, few would guess that an electronics genius was in there designing high-end audio equipment and selling it to the stars. More at fohonline.com.

The world has lost a sonic perfectionist. I remember a number of times doing studio work at Inland Sea, he always knew the sweet spot for any acoustic instrument he was recording. My mandolin never sounded sweeter. The only time he was perplexed was when I showed up with a Swedish Nyckelharpa, he did that sound of sucking air through his teeth and finally found the spot, though he was truly annoyed with the sound the instrument's wooden keys made, I had to tell him it was part of the harpa's sound. He also did sound for the Lake Superior Fiddle Contest that was championed by the late Gail Perry and Bob Andresen. Dave your precision in sound will be missed - RIP
