Selective Focus: Creating Apart

The Tweed Museum of Art will be hosting an exhibition, “Creating Apart: Local Artists Respond to a Global Pandemic” with work by Ivy Vainio, Moira Villiard, Sarah Brokke Erickson, Karen Savage-Blue, Joe Klander and Brian Barber. Annie Dugan curated the exhibition and worked with local documentary filmmaker Mike Scholtz to create a series of short films about each of the artists involved.

The exhibition was originally scheduled to open on Aug. 31 in the Court Gallery of the Tweed. Shifting plans for colleges and gatherings have already affected the actual schedule. In the meantime, the Tweed has released the brief teaser above featuring the artists who were interviewed. Profiles of each artist will be released on a regular schedule in the coming days and weeks, and we will be posting them here on Perfect Duluth Day as they are available.

This exhibition is made possible through a National Endowment for the Humanities CARES: Cultural Organizations grant. The Tweed is hosting this as part of a larger project entitled “Stories of Wisdom from Bodies in Separation: Archiving the Coronavirus Pandemic Through the Lens of Humanities,” organized by UMD Professors David Beard and Devaleena Das. Ten oral historians will be presenting stories in many different media formats.

Look for additional pieces from this project later this fall and winter on Perfect Duluth Day.

Kudos to the Tweed, and to Dr. Devaleena Das and Dr. David Beard for this show!

The grant providing funding for this is a remarkable collaboration spearheaded by two of UMD's hard working faculty who sought highly funding from a highly competitive NEH program to support artists and community members in these difficult times.

There will be lots more coming out of this grant, including archived interviews (done by community members, including PDD's own Paul Lundgren) going into the Northeast Minnesota Historical Center's archives, and further works of art!
