Beacon of Splitrock Lighthouse is lit up every year on Nov 10 to commemorate the sinking of SS Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior. At dusk, there is a small ceremony where they read the names of all 20 crew members who died on this fateful day in 1975. Ship was enroute from Superior, WI to Detroit carrying iron ore. It was the largest ship on the Great Lakes then. On the fateful day, there was a big storm on the Lake Superior with wind gusting at almost 100 mph and waves up to 35 feet. … … For photographers and lovers of this lighthouse, this is once in an year event to capture the lit-up beacon. I drove from Minneapolis to be just in time to capture the light. It was pretty cold weather with winds, which made it little difficult for me. But I am glad I was part of this memorial ceremony, and wish to be there next year as well. … This was also the first time in my life seeing a lighthouse beacon lit up. Hence, I was pretty excited about this whole event. … … #exploremn #travelphotography #photography #landscapephotography #lighthouse #photooftheday #picoftheday #canon7d #captureminnesota #capturemn #bestofmn #thisismymn #americathebeautiful #travelusa2017 #travel #optoutside #splitrocklighthouse #edmundfitzgerald #lakesuperior … … #onlyinmn #minnesota #minnesotaphotographer #bestofminnesota #galesofnovember #greatlakes #splitrocklighthousestatepark #mndnr🌲 #superiorhikingtrail #minnesotastateparks #minnesotastateparksandtrails
