This week we take a look at a different form of visual art with Derick Cich, a makeup artist specializing in weddings, fashion, and commercial clients.
D.C.: I am a freelance makeup artist with a background in both skincare and painting. I’ve been involved in the visual arts my entire life (drawing, sculpting, painting) and went to school for skincare. Makeup artistry is essentially a natural blend of both of those elements for me.
My expertise is makeup for special events and photography; Weddings, head shots, graduation or engagement photos, and runway. I also teach classes and workshops for those who want to learn how to do everyday makeup for themselves as well.
I first dabbled with makeup in 2005 but did not begin pursuing it as a career until 2008.
Similar to any other form of freelance work, establishing myself had been my biggest challenge in the past. Now that I feel more secure in my clientele I consider my biggest challenge to be keeping up with modern trends and styles while remaining true to timeless and classic aesthetic. It’s a very fun balancing act.
The greatest reward I’ll ever receive from my work is seeing the confidence and pride I can help others feel in themselves. I don’t view what I do as hiding flaws as much as highlighting the unique beauty that everyone possesses and helping others view their own beauty is priceless.
The next few months will be filled with weddings and brides which leaves very little time for much else but once or twice a year I fly out to work New York Fashion Week which is full of its own very unique challenges and excitement so stay tuned for that!
